Square Enix: new generation too hard

I think you feel that way because on the PS1 many new titles appeared, which were also helped by the fact that for the first time developers could express more with 3D (or better technology) for the first time.

Wipeout, GT, Tekken, Toshinden (the original), Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Soul Edge, F1, Ridge Racer, Suikoden, Xenogears, vagrant Story, Resident Evil etc all these game captured the hearts of gamers because they had some qualities.

Some of them were new, others unique, others much better than what was offered before etc

Playstation was full of new quality games that never existed before and games that were leaps beyond their old 2D incarnations. Playstation was a heaven of games.

But developers (mainly Publishers) reused again and again and again what these examples offered, for easy money, they made people tired of them and they wont care as long as there are people that buy them. Also because costs increase they dont want to bother with new titles.

Just check the type of these games and how many of them have number 4 and beyond on their titles today. We get sequels every year and reusage of the same old ideas, while sacrificing anything related to artistic quality and better execution.

We get countless of FPS, shooters based on WW2 and fighting "terrorists" on 360 and PS3, and shallow games on Wii. All highly scored, popular and successful.

The problem arent shitty games (all consoles had a ton of them. Even the consoles that hardcore gamers praise). Its the kind of games that are considered popular, the top of the banch and of quality.

Fortunately there are some developers who do offer new and original games but they are lost in the masses of the other shallow but "popular" games

Aye thats probably true. All I know is that when I was a little kid Saturdays were always my favourite day of the week because I was allowed to rent 1 game or 1 movie. I remember picking up Resident Evil because I thought the cover looked cool, same thing with Final Fantasy 7. Never even heard of an RPG before, all I knew was that the picture of Cloud with the big sword on his back looking up at that big tower in Midgar was badass! Hell I was only 11 years old back then when I had my Playstation.

Little moments like that give me a soft spot for the Playstation. So I will always love it.

That\'s what happens to whatever game system you grew up with.

i.e. I was a NES/SNES/Genesis kid. Oh, we had the Apple IIe (a good gaming computer in the mid 80s) and several Ataris, but to me gaming really began with the 8-bit generation.

i grew up with the atari 2600/5200 and commodore 64/128 <----i loved that pc...alot of great games where on that system for it\'s time...i do remenber one game for the atari 2600 called decathlon....it was some sort of track and field game....but to make your player run you had to move the joystick to the left and right very fast with the palm of your hand....i use to hear a crack and pop from the joystick because of it bein under so much stress....i went thru alot of atari 2600 joysticks....:p....funny how that controller had so many functions with that one stick and button,....well i guess the games bein so simple back then had alot to do with it...but i too agree in that true gaming kinda began with the 8 bit generation...

First gaming system I played was the commodore 64 but I have better memories of the NES/SNES generations.

The problem with the new generation jumps is that there isn\'t quite as much innovation between them.  The graphics have gotten to the point that yes, they look a shitload better but they don\'t necessarily provide us with any new interesting perspectives.  The playstation was so memorable because 3D opened up so much in the realm of possibilities.  My generation and the previous generation got to see gaming grow up before our eyes so we hold the infant stages dear to our hearts.  Now its all grown up and a big giant business and it has lost some of the luster it once had, at least it has in my eyes.

Not saying it wasn\'t a business from the start, but there were certainly more chances taken back when there wasn\'t so much to lose for failing.

It might just be that "you grew up". Kids still goes crazy every time I seem them in front of the gaming shelves like I was 15 years ago.

I agree with you, the jump from PS1 to PS2 wasn\'t all that impressive. I cant really comment on PS2 vs. PS3, I don\'t have an HDTV yet. The graphical improvement does look way better this generation than the last one.

The graphic and sound amelioration are a must to make you feel "part of the world" you are playing in. But that immersion is quickly broken when you see repetitive character  behaviors. IMO, the next big step in the gaming industry and game developer, will be the improvement of AI and world animation. Oblivion tried to do this well, and it succeed.. but It as to be better and bigger.
can\'t see why not!
