Need help getting a new CPU
« on: September 19, 2007, 11:53:24 AM »
My cpu fried and i need to get a new one. It\'s kind of cool that it fried since my old one was 3800+ 1.8 ghz piece of crap..considering i could run bioshock on all high, I still have a decent system, so getting a decent cpu will hold me over till more crysis-like games are out and an overhaul upgrade will be worth it.

I need to get a 939 socket processor and have it down to these 2:

Basically, is the difference from 4000+ to 4200+ worth the 20 buck difference?

yeah, get the dual core... you won\'t notice a 200mhz speed deficit.. plus dual core will more than make up for that :thumb:

Don\'t forget you could overclock it too... I got my 1.8Ghz up to 2.4 (which is pretty weak by what most people can get)

Keep in mind too that that X2 is OEM.. meaning it doesn\'t have a heatsink or fan.  You could probably just use your old one, but that\'s up to you.

I think Crysis will be more dependent on your GPU. Not that CPU doesn\'t matter, it certainly does, but if you have a weak GPU it doesn\'t really matter how fast the CPU is. :)

Anyway, certainly get the X2 4200+

Half way correct, but Crysis will benefit from a dual core due to physics and what not. Read an interview the other day with the developers talking about how a quad core would be the best idea.

Is the new AMD Barcelona worth waiting for or should I still stick with intel for quad core?

I\'m an AMD guy. I plan on upgrading to the Phenom stuff, once they get the speed up. I think the first releases are gonna clock at 2.4.

Still, the current Intel Quad Core is friggin great.

Pick whichever is cheaper and performs best for the money. The Q6600 is hard to beat IMO.

Yeah, unless you\'re an AMD fanboy (like me), you really can\'t beat the Q6600.  I am just waiting for the AMD quad\'s. I know I will jump on that bandwagon.

sooooooo turns out my cpu wasnt the problem.

basically, here\'s what was happening. I turned my computer on one morning and it worked completely fine. I went to the chargers game, only to come back to my computer giving one long/retarded beep instead of the normal quick one beep. The first couple times of booting it up when it was crapping, it went to a normal boot-up screen but said something along the lines of "cannot boot from driver\' or \'disk reading error\' (i cant remember which one)

Then/now, it just gives the long beep, and the monitor doesn\'t react to any information. So i took it in to a shop to get a diagnostic and they said their best idea is the cpu is fried, but you cant be sure about that unless you have some expensive equipment they didnt have.

Figuring I can return cpu\'s to newegg, I just bought the 75 buck one risking the 15% return policy rather than paying another 50 bucks somewhere else to get it diagnosed and end up with the same result.

I got the cpu today and got the same exact long beep/no reaction from the monitor. My video card works fine, and Im confident my Ram is just fine. So my only other idea is the motherboard.

Now, I am not really up for buying a top of the line motherboard since I dont want to spend that much money on my computer right now since i plan to do an overhaul in the next couple years. With that being said, I just want to get a decent 939 socket mobo to hold me over. I know 939 mobo\'s are outdated, but I want to replace as little as possible, So if I get a mobo with the same slots as the one i have now, I can just replace the mobo and not the ram, video card, cpu (since ill just keep the one i got today), etc etc.

The motherboard I have now is an asus a8n-sli-uay

Id just get the same mobo, but that one\'s been discontinued and I cant find it anywhere. So does anyone know anything similar to that that I could get?

Depending on the motherboard - that long beep is an error code. Could always google it, but yeah, most likely your mobo.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200022%201070907495&bop=And&Order=RATING

I would DOUBLE and TRIPLE check that RAM tho\'. Try taking one out, start..Repeat and rinse.  Make sure its not the RAM before you bother with another MOBO.

well..i wasted my fucking day on this thing

so i searched around and someone else had the same problem as me. Guess what i thought was one retarded long beep was one long beep and 2 short ones, which means video card. So, like the other guy did (which worked for him), he moved his video card to the other sli slot. It\'s not supposed to work like that but it did. However, it gave me the disk booting error and said i had to reinstall windows/format my harddrive

So i turned the computer off and tried to get some info off my HD by putting it as a slave on another computer and try to transfer some files..but that didnt work so i said screw it and went format, but after I put the HD back into my broken computer, it wouldnt let me format it..so im stuck

Either i just buy the mobo or take it to pc club and hope they can fix it...i dunno

I have a feeling its the mobo because one of the little fans crapped out, then the on-board sound crapped, now it seems like the video card slot is crapped

I checked the RAM again..works fine. I have 4 DDR\'s so I tried them all individually

a lot the mobo\'s look a little too crappy..or theyre out of stock. Probably going to end up getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138269
