This is the gear i\'m getting and their prices.

2x  Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB (2x XMS2 1GB) Twin2X PC-6400 DDR2 RAM, 2x240-pin DIMMs, Non ECC Unbuffered, 5-5-5-12
$103.40

Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 M/b - nForce 560, Dual DDR2 800, PCI-E 16x, SATA II RAID, USB2.0, 1394, 8-Ch, ATX
115.50

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core CPU, 3.0Ghz, 2 x 1MB L2 Cache, Boxed
$220.00

XpertVision 8800GT PCI-E 2.0 512MB 256-bit GDDR3, 600/1800MHz, DirectX 10, Max. Res. 2560 x 1600, HDTV, 2x Dual-Link DVI, HDTV, Fan
$356.40

Will do the job for now and is fairly cheap to boot.  I already have a fairly good psu, a hiper moduler 580W unit.  Measured it under load and its pretty stable. So power shouldn\'t be a problem.  woot

Um, why an old AMD processor? Get in the game, the Exxxx series is where it\'s at. :)

The GFX card is nice though.

its cheap.. Thats why i went with it.  GPU\'s don\'t rely on high end processors. Thats the whole point of them. So the difference would probably be little if none.

The E6750 is only a few dollars more here in Denmark. Oh well.

And GPU\'s can still be bottlenecked by the CPU. That\'s not to say you can\'t get perfectly acceptable framerates with lower end machines, but they won\'t achieve the performance of a higher end CPU.

THX, get the new Intel E8400 [new 45nm part], it\'s about $200 I think, and it can be overclocked to 4 GHz easily! W000h0000000. :)

nothing wrong with AMD (I always pull for them), but I couldn\'t bring myself to bypass the E8400 or a Q6600 from Intel.

The machine this is replacing... isn\'t it like an AthlonXP or some old POS like that?  It will be a hell of an upgrade regardless.  I\'m looking to upgrade my rig sometime in \'08.. started a business late last year, so I need my first big tax writeoff ;)

Nice machine though :)

lol yea, was a Athlon XP 2800+ 6800GT 2 GIG machine.

updated it last night.

its now the posted specs ;)  Running Crysis at high with very playable framerates.

Something i didn\'t know though. XP doesn\'t run with 4 Gig, Something to do with the mapping of the hardware IRQs being basically where the 4 gig mem locations end. My rig displays 4 gig as 3.5gig. 64bit windows fixes this.

yeah, I didn\'t say anything cause I thought you were going Vista.  I\'d like to bump my 939 system to 3 gigs, but older DDR memory is hella spensive!

I\'m thinking about getting another 2 gigs even though I also run XP, simply because it\'s so cheap. So even if you\'re \'only\' seeing about 1 gb extra, it\'s nice to have in case you\'ll ever "upgrade" to Vista.

It\'s not vista or XP.. it\'s a 32bit limitation. Search on google !

Yes thanks, I know what it is. You can\'t fully utilize 4 gigs of RAM unless you\'re using XP x64 or Vista 64 bit. I\'m just not fully sold on 64 bit yet. And I\'m certainly not sold on Vista in general.

Decent build.

My motherboard just shorted out, so I\'m living off the laptop. Gonna order a new one soon.
