any hope in getting stuff off my ipod?
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:54:48 PM »
So i drove to six flags, which is 3ish hours, so i brought my ipod. I didnt want it in my pocket the whole time in the park, i left it in the car. I put it in the trunk figuring it was the coolest place in the car to leave it and all would be fine. But now the damn thing won\'t turn on, either pressing buttons or plugging it into the computer.

Is there some kind of software that would allow you (or maybe the mac store) to get songs off the hard drive, or is the thing fucked? i knew i shouldve dragged all my stuff off it before going to six flags thinking it could fry in the car (knew it\'d be hot as hell) but i was too lazy

Kick it around

Use it as a last resort, but sometimes a little shock is all it takes to get one of those things up and running again.

whew...put it in the freezer and wouldn\'t you know...

anyway, i left it plugged in even though it wasnt showing anything (itunes wouldnt even open with it in). checked it this morning and it\'s all working. almost makes sense because before i\'d not use my ipod in days and it would work then immediatly say "out of batteries". Then less than a day in a hot car and the thing won\'t even start but it was just completely out of batteries. wouldve been pissed if all my music was gone

My old iRiver H340 just gave up about a week ago, but I had reason to suspect it was not the hard drive that was at fault.  The unit was dropped on it\'s power connector while it was plugged in, and I think it broke the connector loose from the pc board.  It worked fine for a while on USB power, then it just quit.  Probably a short or something.

I opened the case and extracted the tiny toshiba 1.8" hard drive.  I had to purchase two items to recover the data:

An IDE (3.5" / 2.5") / SATA to USB adapter

and a 2.5" to 1.8" adapter

Everything worked more or less OK.  The hard drive stalled when it tried to read a few bad sectors, but I just disconnected it and restarted with no problems.  I recovered all my data.

I\'m going to start building some external hard drive back up systems here at home.  I\'m a little nervous about keeping all this data on one drive.
