Question...
« on: October 18, 2008, 01:45:32 AM »
How much of a life span do you guys feel the laser inside a ps2 system will last? I ask this because one day while i was in gamestop, i was telling the guy in there that my ps2 is not reading some of my games,...and these are games that have practically no scratches on them. So the guy stated that my laser is just wearing down and dying out....is this true? and if it is, is there any way to fix it?

I have one of those big block ps2\'s with a hdd on the back of it (strickly for seeing video playback during halftime on espn nfl 2k5).....and i was trying to hold on to this thing since the flat ps2\'s doesn\'t support the hdd....any solutions?....or do i have to try and find a newer big block ps2?....i\'ve had my ps2 since \'01,...so i guess it\'s about time for the laser to be acting funny right?....thoughts?

i would be really..really.....really skeptical of a gamestop employee

i\'ve heard it can get dusty inside, so if you open ur ps2 up and use those cans that blow out air to clean it off, it could fix your problem. i dont think you have to worry about voiding your warranty at this point

I would imagine a laser either works or it doesn\'t.  I would suspect dust on it as well, but not the laser.  Either that or gophers.

yea..the dude was probably just trying to get you to buy a used ps2 from them.

gamestop is filled with a bunch of people who only know about games like final fantasy and world of warcraft, which they know everything about..anything beyond that they dont know shit

the lasers don\'t wear down, the sled they\'re on and the laser mount does. The lasers start to move and change angle. Bad design really. If it is indeed happening to your ps2, you can try cleaning it with compressed air and see what happens. If it is indeed the lens shifting, follow this guide.

soulgrind just made it clearer.  I wasn\'t sure what the cause was until you said it were the sled and the mount wearing out.  learn something new there.

I remember using that link a couple of years ago to adjust the gear for the laser mount and still couldn\'t get it to properly read both the cd and dvd.  when i adjust the gear to a specific spot, it could read just cds only, but not dvds or i could get it to read the dvd discs but not the cds disc.  so i just adjust the gear back to its original location.  I guess after years of using the ps2, the mount and sled wore out that it couldn\'t go back to the original alignment even after adjustment.

Beside the alignment problem, i thiink the ps2 has mediocre reading and error corrections quality back in it early years.  Later models should have better laser mount and better reading and error corrections.  Same thing with newer cd and dvd players, they are more tolerant of reading bad condition discs than early generation players.

for what its worth, most laser have a life span of 70,000 hours.  If assuming you use it an average of 4 hours a day, it should last about 48 years before it wears out.  So, the mechanical parts break down before the laser even die out.  But by then, you probably be upgrading to something better in 5 to 10 years life span of your current player.

Mine stopped reading certain disk at first, then went to reading none at all.  Finally one day I got tired of not having it so I opened it up and sure enough it was a dust problem.  Worked great after some compressed air.
