OK, so some people don\'t want gays to get married because of religion. But most can agree they should have the same rights under a different name.
So, here\'s the answer that satisfies everyone, including separation of church and state believers:
The government can issue a marriage license right now for essentially tax and legal and census purposes. Extend that right to gays and then call every license the same thing. Since we think marriage is a religious thing, then we call it all "civil union". Everyone straight or gay gets a civil union license from the government and they can add to that any amount of religious ceremony that they want to. And then if that civil unioned couple wants to label themselves as married, so be it, that\'s between them and their gods and religious institutions. This would actually make "marriage" MORE of a sacred, religious institution than we pretend it is already.
Personally tho, I\'d be happy letting the gov. hand out "marriage" licenses like it does and extending that service to gay couples because the fact that the gov. has been doing that all along proves "marriage" isn\'t a religious-only institution. Our government isn\'t a church. But, if people want to make a thing about it, call it something else as long as it\'s the same for everyone.
