Thank god I don\'t live in Australia

Apparently it\'s illegal to do a burnout in Australia.  They will impound your car and give you a "hefty" fine.

I did not know that, but it doesn\'t surprise me.  I\'ve spoken with a family member who is an Australian, and he told me they impose ridiculous penalties like multi-thousand dollar fines for driving 2 miles over the speed limit.

Anyway, this article is about the F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, who was caught by Australian police for doing a burnout on a public road.  As far as I can tell, he wasn\'t exceeding the speed limit, but the article makes it sound like he was caught selling babies to Indonesian slavers.

Good thing they got him off the road and made him apologize for endangering no one!

Well..it\'s pretty much against the law here in the states too.

display of speed.
reckless driving.
disturbing the peace.

Those are just a few of the charges one can be hit with doing the same burnout on our lovely land.

Of course none are felonies...but still. Seems to be one of those moeny grabbing laws no matter where in the world one lives.

One of the MAJOR money grabbing laws that i hate is the 55 speed limit on some of our open ended highways.....i know alot have converted to the 65 speed limit, but i still see the 55 speed limit on highways that should be at least 70 mph.....those unrealistic slow speed limits are just speed traps...

If Dale Earnhardt Jr did that in Tennessee he would be applauded over here.  Funny how things change when you switch countries

australia is supposed to be one of the most backwardly retarded nations when it comes to going overboard with road safety. even mark webber spoke in hamilton\'s defence, saying that his own country\'s road policing was draconian.

not that I\'m saying what hamilton did was not wrong. he should have been given a verbal warning and told to be on his way.

I think the police saw who it was, and realised the publicity it would get them in pulling him over. they pretty much used him to set an example in my opinion. seems overly convenient to me that there just happened to be a camera there to catch it all

in the UK, he would have got a warning, in germany, they would have probably commented on him not producing enough smoke, and if he was a ferrari driver doing the same in italy, he would have probably got a blow job off the pope for it.

You\'d think a country with UK-exported criminals would be more liberal with their laws

My favorite line: "is likely to face a hefty fine and unwelcome publicity."

In America no one would care. Not gonna lie, I\'ve done my share of burnouts in my lifetime. Burned off half my first set of tires on my car. Its really not that big of a deal, especially if you do it when no one\'s around. I did it in abandoned parking lots, not on busy main streets.

I have a clean driving record and got tagged doing 83 in a 65 MPH on a state route on the way to ski country. I was passing someone doing 55. $310 ticket and no chance to plea it down, even if I drove the hour to court hearing. Basically, that town survives on people speeding on their way to hit the slopes. Assholes.

I couldn\'t do a burn out to save my life. It\'s a Subaru. Tires grip too hard and barely lose traction.

ooooh, this is great. Keeps getting better. before a minor accident in august, and the speeding ticket, I havent had a ticket in 15 yrs. The town issuing the speeeding ticket is notorious for not allowing you to plea it down, so I plead guilty. Now New York state sent me another fine for $375 for being and "unsafe driver" . what a fucking racket. I gues the $20k I gave them in state taxes wasn\'t enough. Fuck this state. I\'m moving.

Sounds like you\'re getting fined twice....that\'s bulls**t....used to be you could just plead guilty and pay the higher fine and not have any points added to your license...this is the first i\'ve ever heard of the "state" actually getting involved and sending a fine....i know you\'re heated about that one...i\'m getting PO\'ed just sittin\' here thinking about it...
