Turn off/Standy?
« on: April 15, 2014, 08:47:53 PM »
I've always turned electronics off when I'm not using them. But I guess the ps3 was designed to stay in stand-by mode for forever and its the same deal with the ps4. Plus its interesting that pressing the power button when it's on puts it in standby mode, and to turn it off you have to go out of your way and hold the damn thing down 7 seconds if you want to turn it off

Should I get comfortable with stand by mode or do you guys turn your systems off?

i didn't know if you want to turn it completely off, you have to hold the power button for 7 seconds.  i have a ps3 and i didn't know that.  now i know.  learned something new there.

I remember reading the ps2 instructions booklet nearly 13 years ago and it said if you are not going to use the ps2 for a long time, like weeks like you go on vacations or something.  its better to turn off the switch on the back.

By reading that, i think that apply to ps3/ps4 too.  it should be okay to leave it in standby for everyday use or if you haven't use it less than a week.

I thought pressing the button shut it off. Interesting it only enters stand by. I don't care really. It works when I power it up. If it really bothered me I'd unplug it :)

that's what i thought too about pressing the power button will turn it off completely but its actually in stand by mode.  So, if you use it everyday or every few days, or within 2 to 3 weeks, then its better to leave it on stand by mode.

i guess the reason why stand by mode was invented is so you can use the controller or remote control to turn it on wirelessly.

Never thought about that but it makes sense. Don't think the controller itself can turn on the console unless it was sleeping.

My PS3 (fat) was always in stand-by mode because like you said it was never designed to be off-off but my slim I believe was always powered off fully.

I tend to power down my PS4 all the time though, unless I'm downloading or I need to charge my controller in which I change the power save options and put my PS4 into stand by mode.

Personally I'm like yourself OP, I like to leave everything off. However with the PS4 I want to get into the habit of allowing it to stay in stand-by mode.

PS4 is in stand-by (yellow light mode). It is actually useful since it downloads patches, firmware updates and stuff while in that mode.

Oh, and if you access the PSN Store via your PC and want to download a demo or a game you bought PS4 does so imminently if it is in stand-by mode. Wayne's World! Wayne's World! Party time! Excellent!

Thats actually pretty damn cool.

Think I'll get in the habit of putting it in stand-by mode during weekends and week nights when I'll play it intermittently and turn it off while im at work. I just feel better knowing there isnt constant electricity going through it lol

It also sends power to your USB ports doesn't it which will help keep the controllers charged.

I kind of remember having to keep my console on to charge my controllers because they didn't charge in standby mode. Though I could just not have noticed. I also have a charging station :)

My ps3 is always on standby and it powers itself up to auto update and cloud backup my saves due to my PSN+ subscription. If I powered it off fully I don't think it would do any of that stuff.

My PS3 is on standby and is set to auto update in the morning , but most of the times its the auto save backup feature kicking in.

However my PS4 is situational, if I know there is updates coming or my controller needs a charge...then I switch over to stand by. but most of the time it's powered off ready to use.
