Sony sells 10 million consoles which was well above what Sony has hoped for

I think PS2 sales records may have a run for its money. 10 million consoles is an incredible feat, considering the lower supplies over the last 9 months. Just to put this in perspective, the PS3 as of the PS4 launch sold 80 million over its lifetime. Considering PS4 is an eight of the way there and its been less than a year. That is impressive to me and will be interesting to see what the sales will be over the next 8ish years of this generation.

I think it is also worth noting that this article also mentions that 31 percent of PS4s sold were to people new to the PlayStation. Again, that is impressive to me.

The PlayStation 4 selling 10 million consoles in nine months is more than what the company hoped for, and sales at that level defy "conventional thinking." That's according to PlayStation worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida, who tells Eurogamer that this figure could have been even higher if Sony was better able to meet supply demands.

"The 10 million sell-through in the first nine months is well beyond what we had hoped for," Yoshida said. "As you know, we have struggled to keep up with demand of PS4 for so many months. It was hard to find and purchase PS4. Now we are able to supply units so in every territory I believe you can find PS4. So we just managed to catch up with demand. It's just beyond our imagination. We are so happy."

Though Yoshida is thrilled about the console's current sales pace, he pointed out that he is also "a bit nervous" because he says Sony does not completely understand how the PS4 was able to sell so well so quickly. "You need to understand why your products are selling well so you can plan for the future, right? It defied the conventional thinking," he said. "Lots of people thought the dedicated game hardware might not be needed going forward, but still lots of people are very excited. When you see the new games coming out and being announced this E3 and Gamescom, I think there's a good enough reason for a gamer to believe this is something worth investing in."

Potentially explaining the PS4's rapid sales is that gamers who were not historically PlayStation fans bought the console. "Some of the early data was amazing in terms of the number of people who didn't used to own PS3 have already purchased PS4," he said. "So we are getting lots of new customers coming into PlayStation. And some people never purchased any last-gen hardware: PS3, or Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii."

In an interview with Kotaku in June, Sony's John Koller said that 31 percent of PS4 owners are new to the PlayStation ecosystem.

Also in Eurogamer's interview, Yoshida said Sony needs to do more to understand who its customers are and what they want.

"As soon as we see a great sales number, our instinct tells us we should be concerned about future sales, right? Are we exhausting all the core gamers? If we sell this number of units, there are no more consumers we can sell to," Yoshida said. "That's a really terrifying prospect. So we want to understand who are these consumers who we do not necessarily consider core gamers, who are purchasing PS4 and why they are doing it and what they are doing with PS4, so we can create a bit more of a positive future, rather than saying, 'Wow, we have sold to every single core gamer.' So that's what we are doing."

Finally, Yoshida pointed out that Sony is always looking to add new features to the PS4 and introduce network services like PlayStation Now as a means to grow the brand overall. "So we hope we can continue this momentum and reach a wider audience than we were able to do on PS3," he said. The PS3 has sold north of 80 million units worldwide.

wow.  i doubt it might be 17 - 18 millions by the end of the year.  Maybe 13 - 14 millions is my guess...strange that xboxone is still only 5 millions units sold so far.  i thought it might be higher than that.  i remember 2 -3 months, it was at 5 millions.  so, shouldn't it be like 6 millions by now after 2 to 3 months later?

Destiny will be out tomorrow, expect huge Global Numbers for the next 2 weeks; Driveclub will be out on Oct 8th, and it will boost again.  PS4 was at the 10M mark roughly 1 month ago, right now should be 10.6M.  I'm expecting 1M PS4 sold in Sept, and 800k in Oct. By end of Oct, we could easy have 12.4M sold. In Nov and Dec it will be the very High Season, where PS4 can easy sell more than 500k average per week to the end of Dec=other 4M, for a total of 16.4M+. Maybe my figure of 17-18M is a bit too optimistic, but your figure of 13-14M is way too much pessimistic/unrealistic, way toooo much

By the 16th and 17th of April, Sony announced 7M sold while MS 5M shipped to retailers; XBone is selling at an average weekly Global of 50-60k since a long time, which only makes 200-240k per month, and 800k-960k in 4 month. This makes sense, it means that MS managed to finally sell all the shipped units to consumers by Aug 2014.

Yeah, it looks like what you said. Roughly 4M sold by 17 April for XBone.

Dear Paul, I was so busy with job lately, and so tired.  My contract is over with Air Malta, and now I have to find another Company.  I'm at family Home, in Rome, without my PS4     in a month I will probably move again somewhere, what a life.

I'm an airline pilot; I was in Belleair, a flight Company based in Tirana(Albania), where I bought my Home, and where I have my PS4    sadly the Company stopped the operations and I had to move to another company, Air Malta, in Malta, for a short term contract(5 months); the contract is over now, and I'm looking again for a new flight Company.
Right now I'm in Rome, at family Home, and probably I will go back in Tirana in a month to clean and check my Home.

Airline pilot. Now that is pretty cool. I wanted to be one as a kid but when I got to college the state of American air liners was going in the tubes and pilots were losing their jobs. Pursued a career in photography which worked out so much better for me lol. Now I ended up working in corporate America.

To be a pilot now is not so good. Conditions get lower and lower, unless you are ready to move to Arabia Saudita or China, or Emirates, where they still can pay good money.  In Europe is hard to find a good job, and selections are hard.  Hope to find a good solution soon.

You are correct Nate4Drake (BizioEE)!  According to the link below, Sony announced that they had sold over 18.5 million units of ps4 worldwide!  slightly exceed expectations.
