Late CES 2025 and CES 2026 News!

since i wasn't able to log in 2025.  i couldn't post CES 2025 news here until now.  let me sum them up about some of the interesting announcements made about CES 2025.

HDMI announced that they are making HDMI 2.2 version that can support speed up to 96 Gbps which is up from 48 Gbps from the previous HDMI 2.1 which is 2x faster speed.  With that speed, i think it can support up to 12 bit 4:4:4 8K60p video in uncompressed mode.  and probably required about 2:1 lossy compression to support it up to 8K120p video.

At 96 Gbps, it can support up to 4K240p video too uncompressed at 12 bit 4:4:4 color sampling.  Maybe it can support a bit faster than 240 Hz/fps at that bandwidth.  me personally,  i am super happy with 120 Hz/fps video already.  anything higher than that is unnecessary to me.  give me a brighter tv screen or a monitor in 4K120 Hz over 4K240 Hz but dimmer screen any day.

At CES 2025, LG announced that they develop 4 stack tandem woled for their flagship top of the line oled tv.  this tandem woled increases the brightness up to 2,400 nits and consumes less energy and has longer lifespan too than non tandem ones.

This OLED display rolls out to ultrawide at the push of a button

At CES 2026, Lenovo and TCL CSOT showcased a concept laptop with an OLED display that can roll out from 16:10 to 21:9 ultrawide, or even further to a 24:9 aspect ratio.

Last year at CES 2025, we saw Samsung Display's first expandable OLED display for laptops, which expanded vertically to transform into a very tall screen.

This year's prototype at CES 2026, a collaboration between Lenovo and TCL CSOT, makes more sense for media consumption, as it rolls out horizontally to ultrawide at the push of a button.

Just imagine playing Cyberpunk 2077 in ultrawide after finishing your work tasks in 16:10, or watching movies in their native aspect ratio without black bars.



Rolling from 16:10 to 24:9
The OLED panel's default state is 16:10 with 2048x1280 pixels. This is not impressive pixel density, but it can roll out to 21:9 with 2986x1280 resolution, and further to 24:9 with 3413x1280.

These wider formats are ideal for movies, series and gaming, as media content is often presented in different widescreen aspect ratios.

- "Its rollable PureSight OLED Gaming display expands horizontally from 16 inches to 21.5 inches, and further to 24 inches, dynamically adapting," explained TCL CSOT. "Powered by a dual-motor, tension-based system, the rollable display unrolls from both ends to deliver smooth, controlled expansion and contraction with minimal vibration or noise."


TCL's push for OLED
It is a proof of concept for now, but fully functional. Lenovo has fitted the laptop with an Intel Core Ultra processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU.

It is also part of TCL CSOT's push into OLED. The company already has a smaller OLED production plant but is in the process of building a massive $4.15 billion 8.6-generation plant, which will be the first in the world to use inkjet printing for OLED panel production.

CES 2026 ends 5 days ago but here are some of my favorite highlights.  unfortunately, i couldn't post the video of this laptop screen that can roll out from 16:10 to 21:9 and even to 24:9 aspect ratio.  i think you need to click on the link in the quote to see the screen roll out and even in too.  you can also click on the link of the announcement outside the quote to see it too.

LG unveils 2026 OLED TVs: Both G6 and C6 get upgraded Tandem panels

At CES 2026, LG has unveiled its 2026 OLED TVs. There is no HDMI 2.2 or Dolby Vision 2, but C6 finally gets an upgraded panel in some sizes, while G6 takes things a step further.

Once again in 2026, the South Korean company is reserving its latest and greatest OLED panel for the G6. The 2nd-generation 4-layer OLED panel now features what LG calls 'Hyper Radiant Color Technology'.

According to LG, it delivers up to 20% higher peak brightness than last year's G5, and up to 3.9 times more than B6, in a 10% window. The numbers suggest that G6 will top 3000 nits peak brightness but we will have to wait for confirmed numbers until we receive one for review.

G6 also has roughly half the screen reflections thanks to a new structure and coating on the 55, 65, 77 and 83-inch models (not 48-inch). LG claims that it maintains deep black levels, a reference to QD-OLED which can take on a grayish tint in bright rooms.

LG G6 is based on the 2026 Tandem WOLED panel announced a couple of hours ago by LG Display.



C6 gets upgraded OLED panel
LG did not focus on C6 or B6 during its pre-CES briefing, which FlatpanelsHD attended. However, FlatpanelsHD has confirmed that 2026 is finally the year that C6 gets an upgraded Tandem WOLED panel with the 'Hyper Radiant' technology, at least some of the sizes.

According to our information, C6H in 77 and 83 inches will get a version the 4-layer RGB Tandem OLED panel. It is not the exact same panel/tuning as in G6, as LG cites 3x higher brightness than B6, so it is more similar to last year's G5. Still, in other words, the biggest picture quality upgrade to date for LG's C series, including significant improvements to brightness, color and energy efficiency.

There will be three variants of C6 this year. The normal C6 and the CS6 will not get the upgraded panel.

LG is also launching a new, more affordable B6 series of OLED TVs in sizes up to 83 inches. B6 will not feature the Tandem panel either. A new B6E appears to be similar to B5 from last year.

Is it confusing that LG is reusing the B6, C6 and G6 names from the 2016 models? Many years have passed since 2016, LG told FlatpanelsHD, so the company does not believe it will matter. In our view, however, failing to honor iconic products, which B6 and C6 certainly were in 2016 as the starting point for 4K HDR and the last great 3D TVs, is a mistake.

LG is also reviving its wallpaper OLED with W6.



What's new in 2026 LG OLED
Both G6 and C6H are equipped with the Alpha 11 Gen 3 processor, which on paper delivers a 50% faster CPU, 70% faster GPU and a 5.6x faster NPU compared to the Alpha 9 Gen 8 used in the more affordable models, according to the company.

In 2026, 4K120 game streaming from Nvidia's GeForce Now service will be enabled, launching first on 2026 LG OLED TVs. Bluetooth ULL (Ultra Low Latency) is also coming, with latency down to 1ms for game controllers – something that was previously promised for the 2025 models.

Despite the extra horsepower, there is no support for Dolby Vision 2 or HDMI 2.2. LG's 2026 models retain standard Dolby Vision and HDMI 2.1, with up to 4K 120Hz for game consoles and 4K 165Hz for PCs – just like last year. HDMI VRR, Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync are supported for gaming.

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is making its debut in LG OLED TVs, allowing FlexConnect speakers to connect wirelessly directly to TV. This will make it easier to expand surround sound for Dolby Atmos movies and series without the cable clutter. DTS audio and IMAX Enhanced are not supported...

cool that this year lg top of the line tandem woled tv gets as bright as 4,500 nits.  but probably after calibration, its possibly much less than that.  probably around 3,000 nits after calibration which is still pretty bright.  no hdmi 2.2 support yet though and no dolby vision 2 either.  maybe next year?
