80\'s horror movies sucked also. They started mixing all the sex / comedy / blood in with the movies, and forgot all about story.
A good example is.. I recommend buying the DVD box set of Nightmare on Elm Street. After the first one, they started making it a huge comedy series. The last one, "New Nightmare" was pretty good though.
Phsycological thrillers are gone , it seems. Even if there was a good story, the director would probally throw useless sex scenes in, with a ton of fake blood to try and gross the audience out.
Movies like "The Shining" made you wonder. And at the end, there was no clear conclusion on why the events in the movie happened. It wasn\'t as simple as saying "Oh, there was a zombie cause of an explosion", "He is a killer! His mom abused him!" and such things.
Then, they ruined movies about ghosts with special effects. I truly believe this. It is not scarey in the least to see some huge budget special effects movie. But, it is more scarey to see a movie where you can\'t see the supposed "ghosts".
Compare: The Haunting vs The Chaneling.
The Chaneling, totally kicks ass.
Horror movies are pretty much gone. The only way horror movies could come back is if it was a new writer/ with a director of old style. A director with a vision of a gritty place, or place that is very life like. And characters that are life like. Not blonde bimbos with big tits, running around nude. And the chance of this happening, is very little, because it would have no commercial success.
SEX and Violence sells, sadly.
