Actually Joyda, there\'s a lot of trekky stuff being worked on as we speak. In fact, I recall a Nova special where scientists were actually showing off a working Tricorder. Of course they didn\'t call it that, and it\'s functionality was extreemly limited. It could detect objects and their approximate dimensions and mass from a corresponding room. Hey, ya gotta start somewhere. I think the reason why we\'re seeing so much trekky type technology being mentioned is because Gene Roddenberry went to great lengths to actually put science in his science fiction. We\'re just seeing some of those old scientific theories becoming realized and proven.
Back to IT, if "IT" is just a scooter, then I\'m going to be pissed. Whole cities built around it? An overnight sensation? Syeah.. Right. Hell even flying cars wouldn\'t catch on all that quickly. (Face it, there\'s too many red blooded americans & gearheads who love to tweak their "old fashioned" automobiles) At least, nowhere near as quickly as a teleporter would. In today\'s society, the ability to have products shipped instantaniously would be irresistable to large corperations. Whole cities WOULD have to be built around it. Just imagine the impact on factories alone.. You\'d work on a part, doing your job, then sticking it in a teleporter and having it zapped clear across the globe to another factory for the next step in the assembly line. Hell you wouldn\'t even NEED a factory, you could do your job from your home. And lets not forget it\'s military applications. (Instantanious delivery of increadibly large nuclear payloads to their targets before the opposing force could launch a counter strike... scary.)
BTW: The next war will not last 45 years, expecially if America is involved. Even in the time of the sword & sheild when it tooks weeks to months for word of attack or surrender to reach the troops, wars didn\'t last that long. A nuclear device or biological weapon would be unleased long before that, and that would be the start of World War III and the end of humanity as we know it. Remember what Einstein said? "I do not know how WWIII will be fought, but do I know how WWIV would be fought. With Sticks and Rocks."
