Konami Talks Winning Eleven 5
Konami producer Shingo Kotsuka went on record today in Japan regarding his latest PlayStation2 project; Winning Eleven 5. Scheduled for release later this week in Japan, the game adds to Konami\'s already strong soccer lineup. Below, Kotsuka-san addresses all aspects of development including the future on the PlayStation2.
To begin, Konami is currently supplying two different soccer series for the PlayStation2; Jikkyou World Soccer and Winning Eleven. Kotsuka-san explains how this came about; \'I began producing with Winning Eleven 97\', but I\'ve worked on soccer titles since the Famicom days. A few years ago, Konami wanted to supply different soccer series to different platforms. Specifically, KCEO (Konami Osaka) was shifting development from the Super Famicom to Nintendo 64, while KCET (Konami Tokyo) was developing a new series for the NEC PC-FX. Eventually, that series was moved to the PlayStation. Today we have both series on the PlayStation2, which does seem unnatural. [laughs..]\'
Continuing, Kotsuka-san discussed the PlayStation2 and the hurdles associated with development; \'As you\'ll see, Winning Eleven 5 looks beautiful onscreen. For example, the players are large and the backgrounds are very detailed. However, I\'m still not satisfied. We haven\'t scratched the surface in regard to the capabilities of the PlayStation2, and I don\'t think anyone will for another year or two. Development is difficult to begin with, and complicating matters was our short development cycle. We began last May realizing we had to meet a March 2001 release date, so we ended up doubling the size of the team to finish on time.\'
Considering the stagnation currently plaguing the gaming industry, Kotsuka-san went on to discuss the future and how to reinvigorate popular series such as Winning Eleven; \'There are fewer people buying games today. We\'re lucky because the Winning Eleven series has established a reputation as a quality sports series. Nowadays, even games with good concepts are routinely passed up because the market is so crowded and you can\'t guarantee a profit. If we decide to make a Winning Eleven 6 though, I definitely want to be involved. If possible, I\'d like to incorporate online play with twenty people or more. Of course, this can be very complicated when working out bugs and developing a stable server. For the time being, players can enjoy up to eight-player compatibility through multi-taps in Winning Eleven 5.\'
