X-Box not online till 2002
« on: February 22, 2001, 06:20:30 PM »
http://www.dailyradar.com/news/game_news_7112.html

"Xbox will not have broadband capability at launch, a highly placed Microsoft source confirmed today.
The delay, to 2002, is due to a slower-than-expected adoption of broadband, the source indicated. Since the Ethernet connection is built in to Xbox, the console presumably will still work for networked games at 56K or lower, which would make it fine for playing deathmatch games, but not for massively multiplayer online titles.

When reached for comment, a Microsoft spokesperson merely stated that nothing has been announced. He indicated that more news would be forthcoming at the E3 trade show in May, although inside sources expect one sooner."

The source is just as reliable as the CVG article...
MS is not stupid?
if they are so big and smart, why are they not ready
sony was smart enough to not include it cause it was not a viable option...

Don\'t go there. Provoking a mod is not a good idea.

yes, that is correct
but for some reason people think MS is going to be perfect...
Thats not the case

First, they promised a worldwide launch...
well they delayed it in europe till NEXT year, and in japan
now its only a USA launch...
now they are delaying BB and online games

Ok, your source checks out, but please don\'t provoke another fight.  Chrono, I think you are a wonderful poster, do go off ruining it by inticing ddaryl(which I KNOW will read this thread), and we all know you are directing it at him.  Other than that, article is solid, argument is legitimate, and I will give you lots of credit, you got a lot of guts.

MS is big... Sony is big

MS is smart, Sony is smart

MS won\'t have BB up and running in the US this year

Sony won\'t have BB up and running in the US this year

Sony\'s BB plans  in Japan are still a ways off as well. too

WHy does MS and Xbox offend you so much that you feel this need to hate anyone who doesn\'t share your distaste for it.

It kills me that you fly off the handle at something so silly as game console.

or how so called "game fans" are so hateful toward those who do not agree with them, or even worse those who are completely uneducated about stuff but insist they know something

I could care less what you post in the debate forum, but its obvious you are aiming at me which kinda makes me think your throwing a temper tantrum or something.

To be honest Chrono, you owe me an apology for re-opening a close topic and sticking my name in the subject line to boot, you could\'ve handled the situation better, and all you did was piss me off. Those debateable subject belong here.

If you so hated the fact that I closed that topic  and stuck a link that contradicted your hopes and wishes you could of ask me to move that topic to the deabte forum and re-open it for you and I would have.

If anybody in here would think about that article for a minute before flaming against microsoft. You would know that xbox has online. etherenet is still built into the xbox console. It cannot be taken out. The etherenet is broadband. So how can it not have broadband? This article is false by daily radar. I believe they meant to say is that developers may not take advantage of the broadband until 2002. I mean the etherenet is still built into the xbox so it has broadband. So this article makes no sense at all.

Big deal. I don\'t see anyone crying that Sony is stupid for not having broadband up at launch. Instead, it was "oh okay".

MS is including the adapter for people don\'t have to buy it later. That is a smarter move then Sony\'s wait and then sell it approach.

No one thinks MS is perfect.

But it is not that big of a deal either.

This article isn\'t making much sense. We need one of those tech geniuses like Dolbytone(or is it THX?) to explain what this means. The XBOX still has an ethernet adapter but BB will not be available? Maybe I\'m just not reading it right. Can some explain to me why it will not have BB when it has an ethernet adapter built in?

You still need to connect a broadband modem to the ethernet adapter.

I guess it simplty means there won\'t be a MS broadband network up at launch

Par for the course with console releases, none of them go without a hitch evidetally

There will still be 56K based games but how a 56K modem connects in unknown by me cause I\'m not that Xbox educated, I\'ve dedicated myself to PS2 knowledge

It simply means there will be NO broadband NETWORK up at launch. It does not mean that the ethernet adapter / card will not be in the system. I would imagine the BB network will not be up, because they are having problems getting it ready in time a dedicated network that is, to create less \'lag. Something like Seganet. They can\'t just throw a cheap gameserver together, because if it isn\'t planned down to the details and with console games in mind, the lag will be horrible. Another reason is, broadband, while alot of people can use it, there is also alot of people who don\'t have access to it. Then also, this is speculation (though all of it is), developers would have to throw \'netplay in. There is a zillion reasons on why MS may not have the dedicated BB network up for the launch of the XBox.

I would imagine Ms will announce a 56k modem adapter also. But they are counting on broadband to become near standard by 2002 .

Man, this also comes back to as why Sega was so good with Dreamcast. It offered sweet graphics, sound, quality games, and out of the box net play (thanks to built in modem). All it needed was its games, which it had.

But it still took a year for Sega to get the net play running

and Xbox will have 56K abilities from the get go, but you\'ll need to pick up a modem, and 5k modems aren\'t much at all..

This is very true.
Wasn\'t Sega Net running in 2000?
The convience of having the modem built in to begin with is one less hasstle to be bothered with when setting up your system to the net :)
