GS more polygon power than first expected.PS2 and XBOX comparison.Small differences

The ArtX developed "Flipper" graphics chip runs at a peak fill rate of 800M pixels per second, according to the GameCube hardware documentation. This peak rate includes fogging, Z-buffering, and alpha-blending. Furthermore, additional operations such as trilinear mipmap filtering, S3TC compressed textures, and single-texture maps can be performed at this peak rate. While that figure may seem low in comparison to Xbox\'s proclaimed 4000M pixels per second rate, please bear in mind that Microsoft\'s figure doesn\'t necessarily include Z-buffering, fogging, alpha-blending, or texture-mapping and a number of other performance-draining features. In fact, development sources indicate that Xbox\'s realistic fill rate varies between 250-700M pixels per second. For reference the PS2\'s fill rate is roughly 800-1200M pixels per second with Z-buffering, alpha-blending and texture-mapping. So, taking everything into consideration all three consoles are about on par when it comes to fill rate, though Xbox may have issues.

It appears that GC has more polygon performance than it was first estimated.

And that GC XBOX and PS2 each has its own advandages over the other.
XBOX appears that it might have issues when it comes to fill rates though.

Hmmmmmm... Looks like the GC isn\'t being overhyped (compared to the other conoles) and it\'s turning out to be more powerful than expected.  Quite the opposite from PS2 & Xbox.

GC is hyped by Nintendo Fanboys rather tham the Media.
GC is sometimes underhyped by the media though.But I think the most hyped console by its own creators has to be the XBOX.
PS2 was hyped by Sony but it was mostly hyped by media and peoples enormous expectations.

Correction: PS2 was overhyped by Sony.... XB looks like it has been too, but since it isn\'t out, we can\'t be sure...

If you had visited sites or had read magazines about PS2 a bit after the official announcement you would had seen that the hyping had been continued by the media.
And whatever Kutaragi said was deified by the Media.

When first read about the PS2 annaouncement in the UK Ofiicial PS magazine whatever Kutaragi said I was amazed by it.

Internet compatibility,DVD,HD,Camera face mapping etc generally a device that could stand next to your TV and offer general computer entertainmnet.
All these made PS2 look strong.Things that made People excited about.


Sony kept their promise about computer entatainment.HD,Broadband,etc are all in their plans.We ve read seen and heard about these.

Now lets get to the graphics department.The pics spoke by theirselves.The tech demos were enough.The Tech demos(from the first glance) were the ones that kept me extremely excited about PS2.Interviews and news didnt affect my expectations as much as the pics and the movies I downloaded.(fortunately I didnt give much attention to the media\'s writtings as much as I gave to the movies).

(If you take the best games PS2 has now and compare them with the tech demos the tech demos cant compete.I cant figure how the tech demos hyped the PS2\'s capabilities.)

The annaouncement although it was enough to make the PS2 look unstoppable(it really was unstoppable with only DC as the competitor) the Media took the annaouncemnt spread it in the internet,game mags,tv defyied it and voila an overhyped console.They made the PS2 sound like a technology 20 years ahead.

What Sony said though that sounded too much to beleive was  the thing that the PS2 could create Toy Story graphics.
We havent seen that kind of graphics yet on the PS2.We dont know if we will ever see.(But as Capcom said the PS2 is capable of producing almost Toy Story graphics .But needs lot of work.)

Probably Kutaragi expressed wrongly the cpabilities of the PS2.Probably he ment to say highy CGI quality graphics but used wrongly "Toy Story graphics" to descripe its capabilities.


But one thing can be said.Sony hyped less the PS2 than what MS hyped XBOX.
Both consoles though are generally hyped as much.

It should also be known that thats a very old document on the GCN--one that wasn\'t even on the final hardware. (Final hardware didn\'t come until a few weeks before Spacworld)

yes. i read this on ign, a bit ago, and i came across it. it is very interesting and helps prove how close graphically this generation will be.
xbox fans say this article is false, stating that this is based of dev kits, that are 50% of x boxes true power...
but i dont believe that, just when is the x box finally running at 100% at this rate, probably never, especially with the upgrades microsoft always kills us with...

anyways, thats my little 2 cents  and overall, this amazed me. i feel bad for all those x box fanboys when they are disapointed.. but its not finalet, so well have to wait and see!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

Well Falcon4, I can\'t speak for fanboys... *ahem*... but for me XB can\'t do any worse living up to expectations than PS2...



Unicron!-I agree the media did most the overhyping, but it all started with false promises from Sony.  Sony really did make PS2 sound waaaay bettter than it could be. Unfortunatly, the media continued it to a even higher degree.

Let me state for the record, the only things I believe that MS has said is:

1- \'Team Xbox\' cares about gaming, for real. They aren\'t \'MicroSoft\'. They were people from within the game industry who, now working at MS, pitched (successfully) the idea of a console to the higher ups. Every interview with them gives me full faith in them.

2-XB hardware shown publicly is less powerful than the final unit will be. I can\'t say I 100% believe how underpowered they state, but it will be more powerful when released.

Those are the onlythings I believe 100%. Oh, also that there are enough good games coming to warrent purchase for me.

yes! true!  wat amazed me though, was how nintendo didnt want people to hype theur system. they are the veterans, i think they know how much this acutally does hurt sales..
