GT3 damage model question
« on: March 25, 2001, 07:48:23 PM »
Does anyone know if there will be a proper damage model in GT3? Playing \'Jarret and Labonte Racing\' on the PSX (probably the most underrated racing game of the past few years) I\'ve really come to appreciate the fact that a solid damage model can really do wonders for the realism and the gameplay.

Yes, it has been improved, though it remains to be seen how good it actually is.  What I\'d like to see is damage on in someplace other than in the Arcade mode.

So it\'s not in the \'Simulation\' mode? Will the damage be visible as well?

Damage was never available in Sim mode on GT2 so I\'m just hoping they\'ll fix that for GT3.  Damage will not be visible on GT3, I did read that in the same interview where it was said that the damage will be more realistic.

That\'s garbage, play J&L see how it can make the racing twice as exciting because it takes skill to race, rather than just bumping into walls or other cars to turn.

Dolbytone -  I too hope they incorporate it into the simulation mode, really, that\'s something I feel that should have been adressed from the beginning ahead of the graphics or other differences in handling. Dissapointing they can\'t have visual damage as well.

I thought there was no damage in GT3 because the car companies didn\'t want their cars looking wrecked and since they were allowing them to use their cars, then that\'s that.

Ah yes, that\'s what I thought - but look at Jarret and Labonte Racing:

Toyota
Honda
Mazda
Dodge
Subaru
BMW
Nissan
Chrysler

and Ford
all have REAL LIFE car models featured in the game and when I talk about car damage, I mean you can seriously F*** up your car - smash the hood, the doors, the rear, your hood can come flying off, you can smash headlights, wheels can come off etc.

It\'s amazing and it adds tons to the gameplay and excitement.

If you\'re worried about crashing, damage and realistic physics go play Mario Kart. When Polyphony say they have the ultimate driving simulator, well I\'d think that damage both visual and in terms of how it affects handling goes a long way to increasing the realism and enjoyment of a simulation.

Word to that.  I\'d love to see real deal car damage throughout the game.  Maybe they could make it an option for the little guys out there that don\'t want the challenge.

Hey Bozco, if you\'re so good maybe you should do some online racing huh?

Dolbytone,

Indeed, and I\'m not trying to sound all macho or make that I\'m a brilliant gamer - really, the bottom line is that adding a proper damage model really makes the game more FUN!

For example, Polyphony have talked about improved AI in GT3, whereby say you cut another driver off or bump into him, he\'ll come back after you later in the race . Now consider if car damage came into the equation, so at the start of a race you could just bump another driver, but now near the end of the race he may get pissed and by hitting you back may cause your car to get so badly damaged you have to retire from the race - and vice versa.

This is what appealed to me most in J&L - you\'re really on a knife edge while racing because you have to worry about damage, now if we could combine that excitement with the skill and tension of racing in Gran Turismo, the fact that you\'d have the PAY for repairing parts or even a whole car, and then you really would have the ultimate driving simulator. Give me that over 3D rims (as mentioned in the latest Gamespot interview) anyday.

Oh man, that would absolutely ROCK!  Adding such consequence to each race would make it intense and really add validity to the updated AI model of the NPC cars.  We should write them some letters or something letting them know what we really want to see added to the new GT games coming out.

Videoholic is right...

There are some companies that don´t want damage... Mercedes, RUF (Porsche), Lamborgini and so on...
IMO it´s sad, but better a game with lots of cars then only a few !
And at the other hand, it´s all about raceing - not crashes !!!
Wait for WRC and you will see crashes !!!

The idea is NOT to crash man, hence the consequence for crashing...
