ffx have crappy shadow!
« on: April 01, 2001, 10:47:44 AM »
Okay, okay...anybody remember last year square milleniun?  If you do, you probably had download ffx and seen Tidus running around the grassland/mountain and this castle looking.  And you probably saw his shadow that trace his every steps that he run but at this year, when i download the tokyo game show ffx movies, i saw him running around this ruin (you know where there are a lot of fog and tidus found a chest), i notice that his shadow is really crappy.  It just a blob of black spot that follow him wherever he go.  can anybody here please explain me why they get rid of the awesome shadow that was shown on square millenium?
I notice that all characters on battle, even the enemies just have a black spot shadown instead of showing the good shadow that you seen on Metal Gear Solid 2...i look at yuna where she called out ifrit, and this person that use moogle all have black spot shadow instead of human shadow like mgs 2!

also, ffx have crazy graphics but it remind me too much of ff8, they have very high textures graphic but i doubt they use any per pixel fill rate to make the lighting and shading.  ffx looks too similar to ff8 and i am tired of the sameness battle.  hopefully, ffxi have the shadow that i seen on the square millenium.  if anyone have pics of tidus last year on square millenium please post it to compare it to this year tidus tgs.

i think the game that use the most of the ps2 power are in this order:

1) MGS 2, crazy and realism raining, shadow, raining effects, etc .  crazy physics too.

2) GT3, crazy lighting and texture, awesome raining effect, and lovely sunshine.

3) FFX, nice special effects, high texture.  good voice acting and facial expression.

well as you know they are fighting on dirt when she summons ifrit, i think it would be innapropriate if they made refective shadows on dirt buddy lmao.

and MGS2 shadow are very nice i mind you, are those the vector layers in use?

I noticed this too.  It was somewhat confusing as to why they did this.  Maybe it was just too much to program for for the shadow to be manipulated to change as it goes over water trees and lots of small details like that. Possibly they just didn\'t have time to really implement it all that well.  Maybe we\'ll just have to wait until E3 for some more footage.

unknown, dirt or no dirt, whatever surface, there are still gonna be shadows if there\'s a lightsource casting light on objects :P

what he\'s saying is there aren\'t "real" shadows being cast only this Playstation-black-spot-kinda-shadow hehe
not a fine detailed silhouette like in MGS2

Well, if they don\'t use REAL SHADOWS I won\'t buy the game. It\'s THAT important.

For one thing. The Demo Shown at SME was not FFX. Square has stated that it was meerly a techincal demo to show what is possible for FFX.  As for the shadow question. I can\'t give a definite answer with much certiancy. I can say that it might because they put Fog, water, and lighting effects other then the shadow. maybe they left it out because it would take to much slowdown to "cast a shadow" realisticly on the backround. MGS2 does it but they dont show much of the foreground as FFX does. These are not real credible but hey its my shot on the subject.

I thought that joke was very funny.
Also, I agree kinda.
I wish they would use realistic shadowing, but if they dont, I wont sweat it.

Well, last year, I was so hyped up with what i seen, but not, looks awesome but can be done better with ffx.  (you can say i am picky.)  Ajt004 has said of what I was trying to say.  Anyway, hopefully they implemented the shadow on ffxi as they push the envelope of ps2 even further as time goes by.  ffx does really remind me of ff8.  Hopefully its does innovate with new ideas and they don\'t left out a fun place to go like they did on ff8, you know (gold saucer in ff7).  In ff8, only card games are most recognizable with other mini games but ff7 have way much better mini games.  Hopefully there is a deep storyline like ff7 and some hidden characters!  I love the ffx graphics, the fog, the background.  Looks so good.  my opinion why square get rid of the human shadow and put a black spot is they probably don\'t want to spent too much money which i think it already in mulitmillion dollars already, or maybe not enough time or maybe they think that if one character have good shadow,  then all the enemies and townspeople will need to have it and that means hundred different shadows for different characters and that is too much and time consuming.  remember ff7, townspeople and characters on field have less polygons and horse hands look a like then in battle where the character is much more define.

I have one question and hopefully some of you can answer it, have any games has ever used pixel fill rate yet?  i am not sure what the heck is that but i heard it make the graphic looks much better and uses less texture than without it.  and does ffx implement per pixel fill rate yet?
