Hey, I\'m just not really a soccer fan (sorry to all you Europeans out there), but wondering what about this game separates it from other soccer games...why is this one such a huge deal?  Just wondering...

The true mark of a great sports game, I think, is if it can make a person who is not a fan of the sport become immersed...Does this game do that?  I mean, I\'m not a soccer fan or a hockey fan, but I have played really fun hockey games.  Does Winning 11 qualify in this regard?  Would a non-fan like myself like this game, in your opinion? (keeping in mind that I love sports games in general)

YES! YES! Wow, I feel the same way about the truely great sports games. Well, let me tell you that the prequel to this game (Winning Eleven 4) has been out on the PSX for almost two years as ESPN MLS GameNight and ISS Pro Evolution. I have both games and they are, IMO, the best sports games ever. Now while I\'m a soccer nut, the true measure of their greatness is that the four player mode has really hooked my buddies who aren\'t soccer fans in the slightest. 4 Player ISS Pro Evolution is brilliant - the game requires more skill than any other sports game I know, and it has a steep learning curve, but at the same time it\'s a blast to play and there\'s a real sense of satisfaction not just in scoring but even in playing defence properly.

Every weekend my friends and I get together to play videogames and for the past SIX months it\'s been the game we\'ve played the most - even more than 4-player Virtua Tennis!

To those who believe that simulations can\'t be fun, the Winning Eleven series really blows a hole in that theory. There\'s no doubt in my mind that WE5 will be the best sports game ever when it comes out in it\'s enhanced form in Europe.

If you want to know more about ISS PE/MLS GameNight check out my review at SGN;

http://www.sgn.cc/soccer/espn_mls_gamenight/review_psx.shtml

It was also voted as our Playstation sports game of the year last year.

That, I don\'t know.

Neither ISS Pro Evolution nor ESPN MLS GameNight sold well (while crap Fifa sold like hotcakes). A lot of this had to do with the idiots at IGN and other major sites/magazines that trashed both games basically because they didn\'t understand soccer and couldn\'t handle the learning curve. While in Europe and Japan ISS PE (known there as WE4) was getting rave reviews.

I think a good barometer will be the upcomming ESPN MLS ExtraTime (basically a PS2 Winning Eleven 4.5). If ExtraTime sells well in North America (i\'ve already pre-ordered mine) then I\'m sure Konami will bring WE5 over to North America.

ESPN MLS ExtraTime (comming out on the 24th of April) won\'t be as good as WE5, but I\'m sure it\'ll still be a blast.

it sounds like mls extratime is iss 2000 which was released on launch day in europe. this game was produced by the same team who make iss for n64, and isn\'t quite as good as the winning eleven/ iss pro evolution series for playstation. it is still better than fifa, though the gameplay is more arcade based than winning eleven 5.

Tell me ma to put the champagne on ice, we\'re going to cardiff twice, tell me ma..

God\'s goal was magnificient - I also loved the little bit of argy-bargy with the steward after the goal too. :)

I truly hope we thump the Tractor Boyz today - we have such a fixture jam and those bastards refused to re-arrange the fixture.

I\'m an expatriated Brit living in Canada, I was born in Chichester, but my dad went to University in Liverpool and I\'ve been a pool fan all my life - came to Canada in
\'93.

Actually, from videos and KCEA\'s press release it appears to be a PS2 version of ISSPE2 (ie WE2000). I\'ll start a new thread soon and I\'ll post more info on ESPN MLS ExtraTime.

great name kopking. i\'ve read several reviews of winning eleven 5 and it sounds awsome, iss has the best gameplay of any football game, though it\'s the small details in winning eleven 5 that really make it stand out such as the excellent stadiums, crowd, and sound effects. all this should should be even better in the european versions. imagine playing as liverpool in the master league, with the players walking out to you\'ll never walk alone, and all the flares going off, then after kick off, the crown breaking into chants of poor scouser tommy. this game is gonna be awesome

lavan, the ipswich game finished 1-1 by the way

i was devistated by the score line !! well anyways i own winning 11-5 and i think i should tell u somethings that u seem 2 be misled on

1. sorry but the croud dont annimate , sing at all
2. goal keepers easily beating especially on headers and outside the 18 yard box

all in all the game is superb and is worth getting pitty about the keepers though - i beet chile on hard 6-1 with 5 goals coming from outside 18 yard box "!!

well i was brazil but 6-1 has that ever happened on iss in previous versions i am even beating france 4-0 on hard now but annimation is great (players) and replays spot on.

The game is more technical through balls need more thought and timing and the defenders croud the player who is shooting and can match strickers for speed.

all in all a game worthy of a 9/10 - 10 if the keepers are improved on in the uk realease.

also liverpool are good on it but "the god" (fowler) is on the bench and the formation is 5-3-2 no wat toooooo defensive man

need any more info just ask

later dudes
