People should really stop saying "Gore won the popular vote" b/c it just shows stupidity.  The United States Presidency has never ever been judged on popular vote.  It has always been judged by electoral votes and then if there is a tie it goes to popular vote.  Everyone knows that and eveyrone knew that before they voted.  If the situation had been reversed you would hear none of this talk.

Some people may not like it that George W is our president and they complain about it like so many here do.  Your complaints change nothing.  And I for one don\'t want to hear it for 4 years (or 8).

Sorry old chap but apart from being Scotland\'s No 1 Spy Guy

i am also an Environmentalist , and sorry the good old USA is the Super Villian when it comes to the Environment.

USA ...AOK..... nope not if you ask good old Mother Earth !

Same on you people don\'t you realise what your doing to the Planet ?

Stop wasting everything OK ! :rpissed:.

if you ask me we should use all of the Crap that GWB spouts and use it to Grow some ORGANIC Food.

I\'ll be laughing at you when you are covered in cancer and sunburns (I will be to though)

I\'m not here to educate you, but look into the Kyoto details. Some nations are required to drastically cut pollutants while others are not. Period. That so-called agreement is about as fair as a carnival ring toss game.

And just a note. Natural events such as Volcanic eruptions and fires dump more "greenhouse" gasses (CO2) than we with our gass guzzling SUV\'s could ever hope to.

Do your part!!! Stop exhaling.

Yes, the planet may actually be warming, but our contribution is like piss in the pool.

Do I look into the stuff? Hmm let me think, I\'m doing a minor in Environmental Science at University..hmm.... LOL Do you really believe that Natural Events dump more greenhouse gasses into the environment than cars and man made pollution? Maybe YOU should look into this stuff.

Brief Overview:
There has been a direct correlation with an increase in global temperature over the past two hundred years and the industrial revolution. Want to know why? Because 5 billion years ago when the world was just formed the atmosphere was primarily Carbon Dioxide. It was hot, bloody hot, nasty and there was no ozone layer. About three and a half billion years ago when obligate anaerobic phototrophs and then aerobic phototrophs came into play they assimulated the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into organic matter. This in turn let to phagotropic pathways and cellular respiration (ie organisms eating stuff), over the next billion or so year the carbon in the atmosphere was assimilated into organic matter and oxygen was released into the atmosphere allowing for respiration and O2 + O2 = 03 (Ozone) +1/2 O2 = Ozone layer = no nasty UV rays = life on land.

Now what happened to that CO2 that was assimilated into organic carbon over several billion years? Well it became mircobes and other organisms. What happens when they die and sink to the bottom of the ocean (and in conjunction with tectonic movements) - that\'s right they become OIL, COAL, AND NATURAL GAS.

So what are oil coal and natural gas (and also limestone)? That\'s right again, they\'re the several billion years work of CO2 assimilation.

What happens when you burn OIL, COAL and NATURAL GAS - oh yes, that\'s right you RETURN the CO2 BACK into the atmosphere, thus undoing the work of the faculatative anaerobic and aerobic cyanobacteria (and bacteria) that got rid of it in the first place.

IN OTHER WORDS:  You\'re returning the Earth back to it\'s state several billion years ago - ie HOT and Nasty.

That\'s it in a nutshell, but I\'ve been studying this in depth for the past three and a half years at the University level so if you want more info let me know.

Don\'t listen to the Petroleum Companies spin doctoring of the situation. Global Warming is real, and it\'s going to f-ck up the entire world, Rob you may care about the US economy more than the world, but you have to understand that the US is not in a bubble - global warming will affect agriculture, the weather, and even if it doesn\'t have a DIRECT impact upon the US (which is very very very unlikely), it will affect the global economy.

Everything is connected, and those hippies in the 60s yelling about \'Spaceship Earth\' weren\'t totally high on weed after all.

I guess that means you\'ll die quicker. So you should be worried.

Dude I NEVER said I want the Earth to die.  I said "I don\'t care about environmentalists".

They make lots of laws that I see as unnecessary.  And probably George W did, too.

Now STOP SAYING I WANT THE PLANET TO DIE!

And I do care a lot about the US economy, and right now it\'s on the forefront.  If I lose my job I get no $$$ and I can\'t buy any food and I won\'t live long enough to see the future.

Well, other way you are screwed because the tax cut only benefits the wealthy and big buisness, and you sunburn easily. In about 50 years I bet SKIN CANCER will be the number #1 killer. More than aids and other diseases put toghether

On CNN George W said all tax brackets are being cut and that the top and bottom brackets are going to be cut the most.

If global warming and fossil fuel usage continues as it is skin cancer will be the least of your worries. I\'ve read several pol sci/enviro studies that point towards major political and economic instability in the next few decades due to fossil fuels running out, the destruction of global agriculture, and the general mis-management of the commons. Everything is connected, Rob get\'s his tax break now but in 15 years when New Orleans is under several feet of water the US taxpayers will be footing the bill (and that\'s just one problem).

ooseven,
Indeed - great to see another environmental science student who plays VIDEOGAMES! :) I\'m doing a specialist in Cell & Molecular Biology (and also trying to get into med school), but I love environmental science.

there is also the problem with carciongenic materials that are released with fossil fuels, they are the Benzene ring compounds, also there is the problem with most of the processes involved with Crude oil extraction.

Sonic Booms which are used by the oil industry to detect oil, can harm marine animals, and if that was not bad enough the there is always the risk of a tanker accident when after they drill the oil.

#anyway thats enough Doom i am off to forget about work and get a DVD and Game from my Local Video Rental Shop.#

The earth is not my mother.

Fill a glass with ice and water, to the rim.

When the ice is done melting the water level is lower. This is because water, unlike most, actually expands when frozen.

So, if the polar ice caps do melt, wouldn\'t than mean the ocean levels would actually get lower, just like in the glass of ice water?

Hmmmm.....

I\'m sure GWB is a lovely president. After all, he wants to cut taxes!

Well, I\'ll leave it here. I could say a LOT of not so nice things about GWB and the people who voted for him. Or the United States in general for that sake. But I won\'t, so let\'s just leave it here. I have my opinion, you have yours.

LOL Quite the scientist, why don\'t you actually TRY the experiment you outlined and then tell us what happens to the level of the water. You actually outlined one common misconception about rising sea levels, but then you made the wrong prediction.

Ever heard of the Archimedes\' Principle? It states that a body immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid - in English = the level of the water in the glass of water + ice will STAY THE SAME when the ice melts because the mass of the ice has increased the level of the water.

But wait, now you\'ll say that when the polar ice-caps melt the level of the water will stay the same right?

But there\'s one problem - the polar ice caps are not ice cubes floating on the ocean, they are on solid rock and more than 90% of their mass is above sea level. So when they melt the water will trickle down into the sea, thereby increasing sea levels.

Hmmmmm.....
