Strengths/Weaknesses of PS2
« on: April 17, 2001, 05:57:55 PM »
Strengths:

1)  Huge 10 million console lead
2)  Largest Mind/Market Share
3)  Largest Amount of 3rd Parties
4)  Plays PSOne Games
5)  Supports Both 56k and BB

Weaknesses:

1)  Weak 1st/2nd Party Support
2)  Weakest In Power
3)  No BB or 56k out of the box
4)  No "Kiddy" Demographic
5)  Has to fight XBox for market share
6)  Completely Dependent On 3rd Parties
7)  Hard to Develop For (Compared to Xbox/GameCube)
8)  Most Wanted Games have a good chance to be ported to XBox/GameCube

(NOTE: This is all from information that has been shown or released.)
It seems as if the people [casual gamers] that we consider to know absolutely nothing are the ones that actually know the most important thing: Name brands don\'t make the console, games do.

Bozco, MS is giving XBox a ton of support.  Not to mention that 3rd parties will port most (if not all) of their PS2 games to Xbox.  That automatically spells doom for PS2, because PS2 is completely dependent upon 3rd parties.

Final Fantasy on Xbox and GameCube?

Square officials suggest that non-Sony systems could see Final Fantasy games in the future.

April 16, 2001

Square unleashed a flurry of announcements today in Japan, mostly concerning its upcoming PS2 Final Fantasy plans. The company did make some mention of the possibility of seeing the Final Fantasy series on other systems, though. Warning: this story contains both good and bad news.
We\'ll break tradition and start with the good news first. The Final Fantasy series may just come to GameCube and Xbox at some point down the road. In speaking with Japan\'s Mainichi Interactive, Square\'s Tomoyuki Takechi commented that he\'d like to see to it that any hardware that can go Online can play Final Fantasy in the future. Xbox and GameCube will be going Online -- at least we think so. We presume Takechi is hinting that he\'d like to see the game appear on these systems. This isn\'t confirmation, of course, but at least the possibility hasn\'t been ruled out.

Now for the bad news. In the same article out of Mainichi Interactive, Square\'s Hironobu Sakaguchi commented that, as it stands now, it would be impossible to play Final Fantasy XI on anything other than Windows platforms or the PS2. We\'ll take this as a hint that the game is currently not planned for Xbox or GameCube release. However, this could be Square just trying to hype its PS2 and PC products first before versions of the game that might follow. In other words, it\'s possible that this first Online Final Fantasy game will come out across a variety of consoles, but right now, Square is indirectly denying it.

We\'ll continue to keep track of Square\'s moves. Certainly, the comments by Takechi indicate that the company is interested in pursuing multi platform plans, but will those plans include Xbox and GameCube?

The GT series is not even close to being enough to keep PS2 ahead (let alone from staying alive).  Nintendo stayed alive, but they had a lot more than just GT and FF...
It seems as if the people [casual gamers] that we consider to know absolutely nothing are the ones that actually know the most important thing: Name brands don\'t make the console, games do.

You know, Majin Prince, you can edit your own posts by pressing the edit button right under your post instead of posting a whole new post. :)

TM:B and Dark Cloud are also first party games.  And I think FFX is enough to sell tons of consoles in Japan, and quite a few in America and Europe.  GT3 is enough to keep the PS2 fighting strong against the two newer, arguably more powerful consoles. (Yes, arguably.  The PS2 architecture is way different than other consoles, so it\'s very possible the game developers will use all of the power on the familiarly structured Xbox and NGC in the first couple years while the PS2 developers will continue to find more ways to improve their games because of the flexibility of the PS2.)

And lets not forget about Naughty Dog -- possibly one of the most important second party developers Sony has.  If they unviel their game this E3, it could easily steal the spotlight from the other consoles. (I know, I\'m speculating :D)

Also, the PS2 is getting lots of cool games this year that have been listed hundreds of times (no need to list them all again :)).  Most of them are PS2 exclusives, and if they\'re not, most people would rather get the game this year instead of waiting until next year to play it.

Oh yeah, now I remember.  I was thinking that they announced that they were second party developers for Sony, but now I remember that they said first party.  That\'s even better. :D

what is the big deal with Naughty Dog? They made like one game series and now everyone praises them to high heaven. I didn\'t enjoy Crash, so I am not really looking for ward to andy of ND\'s games.

Sony\'s 1st party is still weaskest in my mind.

The big deal is that they said the game they are currently working on is using the PS2 how it\'s meant to be used.  They said it will show the true power of the PS2.  I\'m sure you can imagine why I\'m looking forward to seeing this game.  Let\'s just hope it\'s not just all hype.

I don\'t even know anymore. :)  First I thought they were 2nd party, then 1st party, now I\'m just not sure.  Here is a link from psx.ign.com that talks about SCEA getting Naughty Dog.  It doesn\'t say if they are first or second party though.  http://psx.ign.com/news/30338.html

I guess it doesn\'t matter though.  Naughty Dog is programming exclusively to the PS2.  That\'s all we need to know. :)

...only rumors...it does mean nothing...

 Sony Teams Up With Square

""...Here is what Hisashi Suzuki, president and CEO, SquareSoft Japan commented on the deal: "These are both very important titles for us; our development teams have worked very hard to get the very best quality games for PlayStation 2 and we are sure that SCEE will do a great job for us in the PAL territories. We really look forward to working once again with the SCEE team."

As the deal proves, Square still has very close relations with Sony despite some new eccentric rumors flowing around the net. We\'ll cover more Square news as soon as we hear the bell.""

My 2 cents (remember this is opinion):

PS2 will retain more of a japanese demographic and will retain more exclusives that some might think.  I think alot of big Japanese games will stay exclusive to PS2 because of the difference in fan base.  Alot of Xbox forums I been to have had a negative reaction to games such as FF that are huge japanese games.
Also I believe that eventually, when developers catch on to PS2 the graphic difference in games will be neglegible

Xbox will be a huge succes in the US battleling it out with PS2 which will further seperate the game market from those who enjoy japnese style and those who enjoy more American style.  I believe the differences in these markets could even become as distinct as PC vs console games.  However, I believe it will see a limited degree of succes in Japan due to sketchy support from japanese companies (They do have some support but not full support,  so far they have the sure thing ports pretty much)

Gamecube will take the videogame purist types a well as the younger audience.  Not to mention, nintendo still has more of the mainstream share than some may think. For example many people still refer to playing videogames to as playing nintendo (that i know anyways) the same way someone may refer to tissue paper as klinex.

Overall I can see PS2 being strongest world wide with the Xbox being equall in the US. However if PS2 and Xbox get to similar and the market gets oversaturated i couls see people getting sick of it and switching to the pure and simple gamecube.

yeah, Nintendo has one word for you all, POKEMON and lots of it!!!! THat alone is going to keep Nintendo in the ballgame. Whenever they are losing, they can just release another "Pikachu\'s Adventure" game and make it back to the top.
