Surround Sound 5.1?
« on: April 21, 2001, 05:31:47 PM »
Do you need to buy a special cord to get 5.1 surround sound on the PS2 cause my sony stereo needs 5 plugs. 2 for the front speakers, 2 for the rear speakers and 1 for the centre speaker. But as we all know the PS2 cord only has 3 plugs, 2 of which are for the sound. Do I have to buy a special cord? I havent heard anything about this. Can someone please help me?

The PS2 has digital Fibre optic out

If your surround system is Dolby Digital or DTS ready it should have a fibre optic in

So you need a fibre optic cable

If not then I\'m not sure you will be able to cause I know of no such cord you speak about for the PS2

I could be wrong

The PS2 doesn\'t decode the DD/DTS sound, you still need the decoder for that.  Those five inputs are for if you buy a DD/DTS decoder, you hook it up through there then you hook the PS2 up to the decoder with an optical cable.

Like they all said, your receiver doesn\'t have a decoder built in.  All it is doing is allowing you to send a seperate signal into each side of the amps.  You would need a DD or DTS decoder.

To obtain 5.1 sound from your stereo, you need :
1. Your receiver/amp should have an optical input which shall be connected to the optical output of the PS2.
2. Your receiver/amp should have a built-in DTS or Dolby Digital decoder.
If you don\'t have the above 2 items, then the best you can have is Dolby Prologic but not 5.1 surround.

Go for a DD and/or DTS decoder, or buy a new receiver that supports it and has an optical-in !

Or like everyone else has said, he can use the same amp he already has with the five inputs and just get a DD decoder.  Although it\'s probably cheaper to get a new stereo since most of the decoders are not cheap.  These are usually for high end stereos and people that have seperate amps for the different channels.

But I must need a decoder then.

Thanks a lot.
