Calling all skaters.
« on: May 12, 2001, 09:07:40 PM »
I\'ve recently become a fan of skateboarding(or really, a bigger fan. I always was) and was looking into buying a new board. One of my friends(a skater) said I can get a blank board for about $15. I thought "Great! Cool. Right in my budget." but then I said "But thats without wheels and trucks and stuff, right?". So he says yes and I ask him how much would it be after buying all those, he tells me around $100. I\'m thinking that he\'s lost his mind and I say that theres no way all that stuff could cost $85, so he calls over one of his friends(also a skater) and he says more like $150.

WTF is up with this? You can but a ready made(although kinda crappy) board for like $40 in Target for god\'s sake.
So, whats the deal?

I\'m not a skater, but I can easily imagine that GOOD trucks and wheels would be expensive.  No getting around that unless you prefer a Target board.

I\'m curious about the board blank.  What do you get for $15.00?  Is it just plywood, or is it solid wood, and what species?  If I were building one, I\'d buy some really cool materials and do a solid wood board with a laquer finish or something like that.  Forget graphics and paint.  Go for some flamey birdseye maple or nicely figured Koa.  It\'ll be like skating on a natural finish Stratocaster!

No, well you see thats the point. I don\'t want a crappy Target board, and I\'m not trying to get a super good, top of the line board either. I simply want a decent one.

I\'m not really a skater...
but I have skaters for best friends since 6th grade.

you can get a good board for 100 (more or less..)..

have you seen those pamphlets with hundreds of skateboards? I can never remember how to get them, (you only get them if you request via mail or something)

Target boards suck. they break.

you need good hard wood, trucks, ball bearings, wheels, etc, etc so that the board won\'t crack or fall apart. (which happens alot if you\'re hardcore).

My personal favorite brands are Maple and World Industries. (wait...they aren\'t the same, are they?? ..?)

I have some skater friends and I\'m seriously thinking of buying a board myself and start skateboarding. But, if you want a good board wich won\'t break, it\'s going to cost you at least 150, SS. You have to make sacrifices, you know... :)

Yes, even when I used to skate (late 80s) the good boards were that much.
You could do a little research on the net and see how the prices are.
