Confirm: GCN/DVD Player is U.S. Bound!

A short and concise news article revealed that Matsus_hita\'s GameCube enabled DVD/CD player will ship in Japan shortly after the September 14th launch date. More noteworthy is the fact that the unit will indeed be coming to the U.S., though not until their 2002/2003 business year (which probably means March 2002 at the earliest). No price has been announced at this time in the U.S. but is rumored to launch around 39,000 Yen (about $315 U.S.) in Japan.

This device seems great, although without being available on launch... I don\'t know.  I might trade in for one, but I already have a DVD player so I doubt it.

Matsus hita stands to make some money off of Nintendo\'s coattails.  How is that idiotic?  If it\'s true that movies helped sell PS2s, then why not GCNs as well?

I don\'t think so since from what I hear it\'s be programmed to run games only from the smaller DVD\'s. If you put a larger DVD in, the GC recognises the size difference and automatically starts it up as a movie. It probably won\'t be too long before hackers find a way around this though. Hell, it\'s not like the mini-dvd\'s would have stopped them either. After all, they did find a way to crack the DC\'s copyprotection even though the GDRoms could hold about 600mb more data than a normal CD.
