WipeOut FUSION
« on: May 17, 2001, 11:53:46 AM »
Quote

When the doors opened, the first game that
we sought out was kiosk in the Sony
                  Computer Entertainment Europe section of
Sony\'s booth that had WipeOut Fusion in
playable form. Still not officially announced for release in the United States,
the all-new WipeOut for PlayStation 2 is shaping up to be one of the best
racing games that\'s coming out for the system.

Since only the beginning levels were opened up in the game, there wasn\'t a
way to see if the speed of the expert levels in the PlayStation games in the
series has been brought over faithfully to the PlayStation 2. However, even
the beginner levels in this PS2 version had a good sensation of speed and
is definitely as fast, if not a bit faster, than the beginning stuff in WipeOut
                  XL or WipeOut 3.

The most notable gameplay improvement can be seen in the precision in
control. The movement of the vehicles have been tuned perfectly with the
analog stick on the Dual Shock 2 controller and the control just feels silky
smooth. Navigating the craft around all of the various twists and turns on
the tracks feel just about as perfect as you could ever want it to be. The
control is highly responsive and just feels perfect.

Otherwise, the gameplay is exactly like what you\'d expect from a
WipeOut game. You have weapon attacks, special attacks, and a
power-up boost, plus you can look behind you and play the game from
four different viewpoints -- standard behind the vehicle, a close-up behind
the vehicle, hood view, and full screen view. Adding a bit of style to the
game, when you use the L1 button to look back, instead of just getting the
view from behind you normally, you get the view through a green static
screen, which simulates checking some sort of a monitor in your ****pit to
                  see what\'s to your rear.

Another really cool and noteworthy thing to mention is that the track
designs are truly out of this world. The WipeOut series is well known for
its excellent track designs and it appears the Fusion will continue this
tradition. The tracks we played were large in size and had tons of cool
objects in the background. There\'s some very minor pop-up, but it never
                  ever becomes an issue.

One of the coolest things with one of the tracks that I played was this loop
that just felt and looked amazing as you screamed through it. The track on
the loop is slightly transparent, so you could see the huge environment
behind it and the feeling that you got while going through it was pretty
intense. You actually felt like you were going through some real loop on a
                  rollercoaster.

There was some slowdown in the game when all the craft were onscreen
at the same time and weapons were being fired and the game could use
some cleaning up as far as aliasing is concerned, but WipeOut Fusion is
one of the most impressive games of the show so far. It just feels so damn
                  good.

Now I just want some videos of it in motion.

Some new movies would be great. The old ones had almost no textures.

all i can say is that this game WILL rock.  i hope its more like the second wipeout rather than wip3out

the graphics are sweet like chocolate boy...no redraw point (as far as i can tell)  looks nice and sharp...nothing overwhelming, but its not bad...does the job.  As long as its 60 fps and has a great sensation of speed...sweeeet

this game has been on top of my waiting list since the launch of Ps2 as well - it is one of the reasons why I bought Ps2. And now, looking at those amazing impressions really gets my excitement up... I\'m really waiting forward to the release! [ isn\'t Wipeout Fusion released this summer in Europe? ]

It WILL definetely Rock...

Wow!!  I loved the Wipeout series on PSX, especially Wipeout 3.  I can\'t wait for this game to come out.  Hopefully the game will have a steady framerate, preferably 60fps.  I would be satisfied with a steady 30fps.  I have Test Drive Lemans for Dreamcast and it\'s locked in at 30 fps and it\'s fast, amazing considering all the cars on screen.  I\'m sure this game won\'t disappoint.

awww yeah, I\'m am one of the biggest wipEout fans in existance, before the ps2 was even released i was just salivating over the idea of a ps2 wipeout, and it\'s finally here.... damn I seriously can\'t wait.

As for the framerate issue, they announced long ago that it would run at a silky smooth 60 fps, so let\'s hope they can hold true to that....

damn I just can\'t wait :)

Also, this is the first WO in the series that the designer\'s republic HASN\'T taken care of in the art direction department. But I must say, whoever took over (probably psygnosis) did a DAMN fine job, it looks VERY VERY cool, the whole onscreen interface. wow.... i really do hope it\'s more like WipEout 2097  (XL in the states)... that was the pinnacle of style in a top class game.

I can\'t wait :)
Probably the earliest flyswatters were nothing more than some sort of striking surface attached to the end of a long stick.

Gradman,

Wipeout Fusion is currently being developed by SCEE Studio Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis Liverpool) . They were responsible for Colony Wars, Colony Wars: Vengeance, Wipeout, and Wipeout XL/2097. They also developed the soon-to-be released Formula 1 2001 for PS2.

SCEE Studio Leeds did Colony Wars III: Red Sun as well as Wipeout 3. SCEE Leeds is the last of Sony\'s european inhouse teams to announce their PS2 ganes. Leeds has a staff of about 50 working on 2 unnamed Playstation 2 projects.

I am glad that Wipeout Fusion appears to be back on the development trail. Previously, members of SCEE had to divide their time with F1 2001 and assisting SCEE Team Soho with The Getaway. But now they\'ve settled back to concentrate on WOF. The build I played briefly today at E3 was spot-on with regards to the control. The analog stick control was crisp and the track designs were large with abundant background detail. Plus the transparent track loop was a nice effect.

I look forward to seeing the final retail version.
-Kenji
