ZERO online play for Halo
« on: May 25, 2001, 09:57:10 AM »
The XBox exclusive game Halo developed by Bungie will not have online play as originally thought, ppl were saying that there was a chance you could enter a password a little later down the road to open up Halo\'s online capabilities but as it turns out it wont, will this hurt the sale of the XBox?? Maybe since Halo is a highly anticipated game for the XBox and I think a lot of ppl were looking forward to online support, we\'ll see at launch though, heres the article:

The word from Bungie\'s Matt Soell is that Halo\'s online capabilities will be zero. It appears Microsoft isn\'t providing enough information for developers to code in net game support. Here\'s the post from Bungie:
Unfortunately it\'s not possible for us to code support for internet play without more info than we have now. So Xbox Halo won\'t magically work over the internet when MS gets their networking stuff up. I don\'t think a patch will happen either.

A separate product is a possibility, but as things stand right now there is no definite plan for such a product. The team gets to decide what they work on next, but they won\'t make that decision until Halo is done.

I should make clear that I\'m talking specifically about the Xbox version of Halo here. -Matt

So the PS2 will be the only console with online play at that time (besides the Dreamcast, of course).  I think that will help the PS2 sell a lot more units.

When is the Xbox\'s online network going to be up and running?

Oh, and that sucks that Halo won\'t be online.  I\'m sure  that a lot of people will be disappointed when they hear this news.

Halo isn\'t online.... that kinda sucks bigtime. That was practically the whole purpose of the game! :(

Of course it can still be a fun single player / LAN game, but still... I think it\'s too bad.
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAPETIME!

Already knew this months ahead of time. Indeed it is a shame, I guess those who want to play it online will have to wait for the PC version.

I was over at MSXBOX and I couldn\'t believe how many people still wanted the game, even without the online play included.

That really sucks for MS.  This was to be their flagship title.  It still can be the flagship title, but without massive online play, what makes it so different than other console FPS\'s?

Ogodly:  I thought the PC version was scrapped.  I remember seeing it somewhere at MSXBOX....
It seems as if the people [casual gamers] that we consider to know absolutely nothing are the ones that actually know the most important thing: Name brands don\'t make the console, games do.

I don\'t think a patch will happen either.

No offense, and maybe I\'m being a "drama queen" here.. But why did he even THINK to use the word "patch"?????

I thought so.

The word "patch" is something MS has tried to distance themself from, and now Bungie releases a public announcement and mention that they THINK a patch won\'t happen later. They should KNOW a patch won\'t happen later, because console gamers will not tolerate having to patch games.

Bungie has said there will be no patch either. Good riddance to online play. I have Q3 for DC and rarely play it online. I prefer playing fps\'s as one player anyways. RPGs, Fighting and Racing games are the only games I\'m looking foward to playing online.

That being said, many people do want online play, and this will hurt success of the game in a big way. It\'s effect on XB isn\'t as bad, but it may turn some people off of it.

The PC/Mac versions of HALO are still coming out. It was confirmed by Matt not too long ago. They\'re going to finish up on the Xbox version, take a break, then start the port.

Same with over here. Let me be more clear, every forum has fanboys. Now MSXBOX has about 5x more people posting there than here. Therefore it seems like there is more fanboys over there, although i\'m betting on a percentage both here and MSXBOX is the same. I\'m sure sure Ho3j would agree!!!

that is dissapointing, because this was the only game at launch that interested me most, especially the online part...now that it may not happen,that\'s going to limit alot people into buying an Xbox even more.

Well honestly, I am not worried about Halo not having Multiplayer via Internet.

I honestly have not seen a single game that plays over the Internet for PS2 or Gamecube yet.

It will come, it will come in 2002 and really thats not a bad thing.  November 8th is almost 2002 anyway.

I have seen some of the titles that are coming and that most of you don\'t know about and I have one word to share with you... "AWESOME"...

So many people are ragging on microsoft because of the E3 showing, but the secret is that there was a ton of stuff that they were not showing for three main reasons.... 1) Getting the titles to an even better state on the final hardware and 2) The element of suprise and shock and 3) Making sure there are plenty of anouncments between E3 and launch.  So the hype is spread out between E3 and launch.  If they showed everything at E3, not only would it not look as good as say coming out in October, but also because the hype would be over and everyone would be waiting and waiting with nothing new coming up.

There are other online projects in the pipeline and more interesting ones to boot.

Don\'t ask so I won\'t tell. :)
Shweeet!
