Nintendo lied about the GBA?
« Reply #15 on: June 25, 2001, 08:08:31 PM »
In a press statement today, Nintendo announced that the Game Boy
Advance sold through a half-million units during its first week in stores,
making the GBA America\'s fastest-selling game system ever.

"We knew demand was going to be strong -- but this is a record-setting
response," says Peter Main, executive vice president, sales and marketing,
Nintendo of America. "The good news is that we are able to ship
approximately another 500,000 units by end of June with further product
to become available through July and August."

But is it really America\'s fastest-selling game system ever? We seem to
remember Sony claiming similar numbers back in October 2000 on the

PlayStation. We spoke with Molly Smith, Sony Computer Entertainment
America\'s Director of PR this afternoon regarding Nintendo\'s statement.

"We sold 510,000 units in the first two days the system was in the market.
That\'s based on our [Sony\'s] initial numbers," said Smith. According to
Nintendo representatives, the company based its numbers on the most
recent NPD and TRSTS sales data for the month of October, which
stated that the PlayStation sold through only 309,000 units that month.
Smith commented: "TRSTS represents 75 to 80% of [the US]
                  market...not the entire market."

As for the "Fastest Selling System" claim? Molly Smith offers this: "At this
point, the PS2 is the fastest selling system ever...and there is no system yet
that could beat that, especially on a worldwide basis."

Regardless of who wins this title, Nintendo still plans on selling more than
one million systems by the end of June, and 23 million units by March
2002. And that\'s a whole lotta systems. If Nintendo delivers on those
numbers, GBA would indeed be the "Fastest Selling System"...ever.

Why did they lie? What was the point when if people just searched the webthey could find out the truth. This was a stupid statement to make because once word gets out this will affect the marketing worse then if they just had told the truth. Who wants to buy stuff from liers? How will people now they didnt lie about the games if they never saw any pics or seen it? Trust me this is the biggest marketing statement Nintendo has ever made!

Is it me? Or does PSone own all the other systems?

Me. I have no problem that I invested my money into a GBA and will a GC. Why? Because (1) the games are fun and (2) every company lies about something. Not to mention I just don\'t care if they lied about sales. I know they sold at least one to me, so that is all that matters to me. This also won\'t effect future sales as the typical person does not keep up with sales numbers, they just go to the store and buy the system.

In short: This won\'t effect Nintendo any. No big deal.

does it really matter though

i mean of course GBA will sell like hotcakes for one there is no competition for them and for two they are a lot less than 300 bucks - hell why wouldn\'t they sale like crazy

but even if it sells more it can\'t be the fastest selling console - fastest selling handheld yes - but how hard is that to pull off
This Sig is a Work in Progress.

Before Nintendo said anything about selling the 500,000 units... Sony had said back in October that they had sold 500,000 units. I found the exact Url at IGNPs2.com that tells this Sony Explains PS2 Shortages. It says in there that Sony had 500,000 units. Also after this Sony said that they sold out all of the "500,000" units. Now.. Someone comes along, and beats their launch sales. People, Sony just lied to make it look like they were better. The another quote:

Quote
"While Nintendo must be commended for the sales of their machine, in reality the PlayStation 2 sold three times as fast when it was initially launched, and we could have sold as many as three times the amount we achieved had we anticipated the demand."

"Also worth pointing out is that the PlayStation 2 cannot really be compared with the Game Boy Advance, due to the different price brackets of the systems. The PlayStation 2 is a complete multimedia package, and costs four times as much; it\'s pointless even making a direct comparison."

This here just shows what I am talking about "had we anticipated the demand....." Sony knew well that they had shortages, I don\'t know where they came up with this. The demand was so great.

Yes, comparing the PS2 to the GBA is a very hard proccess. You can\'t campare the graphics because its not a console, its a handheld. And the price range is much diffrent. Since we are talking about the American lauches of both systems in that quote we have this: "The PlayStation 2 is a complete multimedia package, and costs four times as much." I don\'t know where they get the 4 times as much. The GBA was $100 most places at launch, and the PS2 was at $300. The point I am trying to make is that Sony will tend to lie and push numbers to the limit to look higher (such as the polygons per second remark of how high the PS2 goes with no effects on which is like 75 or something, then the GC says how many with the effects on 12, and you get the numbers all messed  up, and people think the the PS2 is much better Note: NGC can go over 12, the Star Destroyer in the Rogue Leader playable level at E3 did 8 million polys a sec on its own.) The 510,00 mark is not true at all. Its kinda like the David Manning thing.

Uh, so if SONY can lie, then what about Nintendo?  Plus, I wouldn\'t say that SONY lied, but the representatives  either were misinformed on a specfic detail, or they stretched the PS2\'s abilities.  They\'re trying to sell something, just like everyone else.

About the demand thing, when Sony first started the manufacturung process, they estimated the # of PS2\'s to be produced and set a budget.  This was long before they found out the demand was so high, and by then it was too late to make adequate changes.

Sony lies a lot more than Nintendo does. I said something to SonySource.com and they agreed with me. I can\'t remember where Nintendo lied about any of its specs of a system, they changed some, but to make it better.

They new well the demand would still be so high, they were garenteeing 1,000,000 units in the US, but only half of it came. They knew that there would be shortages, and they had been hyping the PS2 for along time before hand.

They also knew that they never had an extra 10,000 units. It was around 500,000 and everyone said back in October the same thing. But then they needed something to make it look better than the GBA, so they make something up and the general public belives them.

There was a certain part needed for PS2 that ran out during initial manufacturing.  That\'s why they didn\'t have enough at launch time.  Either that, or some penny pusher up the corporate ladder made a mistake and won\'t admit to it, accounting for the shortage.  In any event there was a shortage and SONY has probably figured out why and has probably learned their lesson.  End of story.
