France assisted the American colonists in the Revolutionary War (or Civil War as my headmaster from Britain told me). To what extent, well, it\'s been a long time since I read my high school history books but I do recall a French sargent training the colonists on how to aim and shoot, march and follow various commands for field battle.

They at least helped to make America. Without French support in the war there is no guarantee that the US would have won, not facing a well trained army as the Brits had.

The French Navy was the biggest help.  No denying that, but the France of today is not nearly the France of 1781 so it is hard to compare the two situations.

Seeing that we are in a mood for renaming or destroying anything French.

When will you behanding back the Statue of Liberty ?

it is after all a gift given to the Colonial forces after their victory of the battle of independance over the British.

It was a Revolutionary War.

Think of it America as an independent State didn\'t even Exist until the victory over the British was achieved.

Yes the war was over independence but the country wasn’t born until the singing of the decoration of independence

And not only did the French help train colonists  but most of the Americanised Militray speek (even to this date ) reflect this.

The American history teacher could only wink at me.

I was assigned to sit at the Headmaster\'s family table that week. All of the students in the dorm had assigned seating at the Dining Hall each week.

From what I\'ve read (its been a while for me too) they sent over something around 10 000 - 20 000 soldiers. Might have been more, my memory is a little fuzzy on that part.

Im going to look for more info when I have time.

I don\'t think so. For that time, that\'s a LOT of soldiers to transport across the Atlantic! Especially when the Royal Navy ruled the seas!
