Hold it open? Now I\'m lost. Sorry I couldn\'t be more helpful, it\'s been quite a while since I worked on mine. I do remember it wasn\'t easy and I\'m fairly handy when it comes to odd little jobs like that.

BTW, did you expose and clean (i.e. blow air) around the lens really well before you tried the adjustments?

I asked my mom for help and she help me

:lmao:

Sorry, I don\'t know why I found that so funny :p

Joking aside, I really wish I could help you. With the different models, its hard to come up with an idea. What about something really flat and thin to stick in the hole to push it all the way in?

in order to slide the ribbon into the slot, the ps2\'s side have to be open firmly.  the slot is deep back inside there and is underneath, by holding it open i can slightly lifted up the ps2 to make a gap and that also reveal the slot to slide it in.  But it was hard, pretty hard that I gave up.

Last month, I finally went to the have the playstation 2 fixed and I looked at how he fixed it.  He took the eject and reset buttons off the top case.  I didn\'t know you can took the ribbon off the case that easily.  Then, he switched to a different ribbon because mine ribbon was missing a blue strip.

Then, he unscrewed the two screws shown in red circles in the picture below and he flipped the ps2 over and opened the bottom case.  I didn\'t know that you can open the bottom case by unscrewing those two remaining screws.  Next to the empty hard disk drive is where the slot is.  He inserted the ribbon back into the slot and test it, and presto.  The reset and eject button leds turn on.  He pushed eject and the tray opens.  So that means the ps2 finally works.  Finally, he inserted back the reset and eject buttons back to the top case and close the top case and handed it back to me.  He charged $15 for about 5 minutes of work which i think is a good deal and that is still a lot cheaper than buying a new ps2.

So, watching a bit of what he did, I learned like two things new there that you can removed the reset/eject buttons off the case easily and you can insert the ribbon back to the ps2 slot by just opening the bottom case by unscrewing the 2 remaining screws.

So, afterward, I went home and opened up the ps2 again and try to adjust the gear on the tray until I can find a spot that the laser can read both dvd and cd discs.  After hours of adjusting the gear, I couldn\'t find a spot that can read both the dvd and cd.  If I find a spot that can read dvd discs, but it have trouble reading cd discs.  If i find a spot that can read cd discs, it have trouble reading dvd discs.  Mine ps2 really does have crappy laser pickup.  So, I gave up and adjusted the gear back to the factory default spot and inserted back the eject/reset buttons to the case (I broke the tip of this part that hold the buttons on the case but its okay since it doesn\'t broke any electronic parts) and closed it and put the screws back in.

Maybe in the future I might need open the ps2 to readjust the gear again, who knows.

Help on re-attaching ribbon to ps2...

Okay I know this is an old topic and all, and I registered just because Google results came up with this topic and I thought it was lucky of me to find it but I seem to be having the same difficulty with this ribbon.  I have opened the bottom part of the case by unscrewing the two screws like you said Paul and I can\'t seem to find this "slot" where to put the ribbon in.  I looked near the HDD bay and I tried several locations but none of them seem to be right, so if you can, can you show me the exact location (like a picture of the ones u have in this topic) of where the slot is?  Much appreciated thanks

check your pm...i am sort of busy right now, so maybe in some more days, i might have the picture ready.

Anyway, recently, I find out that my sister ps2\'s model is slightly different than mine too.  On her version, you can actually lift up the right side of the ps2 shown in the picture above and the slot is in sight.  It\'s easier now to insert the ribbon into the slot, so no need to bother opening the bottom of the ps2.  Even the gear for moving the laser is different than mine too.  her ps2\'s gear is cover and require a special octagon screwdriver to adjust the gear...

I guess Different ps2 versions/models have some slightly different layout and parts...

Pic 1:  Top view of ps2

Pic 2:  Side View of ps2

Pic 3:  Top View of upside down of ps2

Pic 4:  Side View of upside down of ps2

Pic 5:  Side View of upside down ps2 close up

So, on the last pic, you can see the slot that I am talking about.  Its right next to red&black, yellow, and white wires underneath the HDD bay.  Just insert in the ribbon, and it should work.  just remember to insert on the correct side where the blue strip should appear on top of slot of the upside down ps2 (picture 3 and 4 should helps on what i am talking about...)

and the 7 lines on the ribbon should appear on the bottom of the slot where the slot have 7 marks is (picture 5) when the ps2 is upside down...

If you have anymore questions about it, feel free to ask.

Hmm, are you serious or are you just giving me a hard time?  I had to opened up the ps2 again and take pictures of it for you.  But now, you are telling me this?  Do you have a pictures of your ps2 open, and the ribbon to prove your case?

Anyway, I never try plugging in the ribbon without the blue strip.  Try it first to see if it works.  If not, I guess you need to find something to use as a replacement for the blue strip.  Maybe piece of a plastic bag or plastic wrapper might work?

If all else fails, I suppose going to a repair shop would be a good suggestion.  If you happen to go to a repair shop, go to one that specialize in repairing videogames system.  Look on the Ads of the newspaper for one i guess and ask for a blue strip.  Maybe the charge for the strip is probably no more than $1..if that still doesn\'t work or cost too much or whatever, i guess buying a slim version of ps2 would be another suggestion.  Or you can wait to get a ps3 console which is backward compatible with ps2 and psone games....

I kid you not, I am serious with the blue strip, remember the PM you sent telling me it was a few days for you to take pics?  Well during those days I was attempting to put the thing in the PS2 and it must\'ve fell off, its really fragile...I guess mine is.  I am using something that will hold the cable in the slot... hopefully I got it right (the white part is facing up on the upside-down PS2 right?).  The way I have it is really ghetto... for some reason I thought the blue strip was some sort of power thing.  If I can pull this off, it would be a miracle

Thanks for the pics though, amazing help you have no idea...  So give me some time and I will have a solution, wish me luck

i remember when i first accidently knock the case off my ps2, the ribbon come off and i lost the blue strip too and the repairman switch me a different ribbon with the blue strip.

Yeah.  I think the white part is suppose to face up, and the part with the 7 lines is facing down on the upside down ps2...(can\'t really remember since already i put my ps2 back together after i took the pictures.)

I don\'t think the blue strip is for powering up the ps2.  Honestly, I am not really sure what its for, but maybe its there to hold the ribbon in place or something.

Good luck btw.  Keep us updated.
