Disc Read Problem
« Reply #16 on: March 02, 2002, 11:25:55 AM »
Well, if the the "defect" is that it causes disc read error messages when booting some games, then I know I\'ve got the \'defect\'.  First, I have one of the 1st PS2 games.  I got mine before Thanksgiving 2000.  I\'ve only played one DVD just to see the quality.  About 2 months ago, all EA Sports games (even brand new ones) began prompting Disc Read errors on boot . After repeated trys the game would load - but what a pain.   I read this is a problem with EA Sports because of the data they load on startup but some other games, again mostly sports games that are not EA Sports (NASCAR Heat, for example), started to do it.  I have this 3-in-1 skip cleaner per a recommendation and it helped for awhile, but now the problem is unbearable.  It\'s driving me to drink...more.  I have no kids.  I take care of my equipment.  My wife may have sabotaged it but I doubt it.  What\'s the scoop about the pestilent problem and how do I resolve it?  And don\'t say "Keep drinking till you pass out until you forget about it."  Thanks.

Well first off, didn’t you purchase a store warranty with your PS2? If you did, bring it back to the store and have them replace it. If not, It will cost you over 100 bucks to have Sony fix it. Hope you still have the manufacturers warranty. Secondly, if you are not able to fix your PS2 by the first two methods, just keep drinking until you pass out, you\'ll forget about the whole thing...

Disc Read Problem

If you are having a problem with only one game, like Dynasty 3, it may only be scratched like you wrote.  I do recommend this "3-in-1 CD Skip fixer" to keep your discs clean which helps to not scratch the laser.   All my problems began and continue with EA Sports games, some straight from the shrink wrapped case!!  At first I only needed to reset the console a couple times and at sometime it would boot.  Having experience in software QA, I setup test scenarios.  The only thing I did find, is that if I play a non-sports game for about an hour, the odds of an EASports game booting increases.  As I\'ve said, ALL my EASports games have this problem, but I am getting the problem from other sports games from Acclaim (High Heat for example).   Thank God, Grand Theft Auto 3 boots BUT again, I\'ve had to cross my fingers on the PS2 screen which displays the memory cards and hope that a CD icon displays.  Thankfully, it has.  I am certain that the problem is twofold:  First the PS2 has a problem somewhere on disc boots.  Contrary to other posts here, it does not have to od with user care.  (A vendor near my house says he has two renatl units with the same problem).  The second problem is that EASports packs a lot of data (those cool live action scenes) that needs to be loaded on startup.  I am convinced that if your console has a problem reading a disc, at some point the unit times out and then it\'s Jim Beam time.  Good Luck!

Oh, and my warranty has expired.  My options are to call Sony which I have learned, to fix this proble, costs about $100 to fix plus shipping.  The good news is that people with say Sony is very responsive and usually have your console returned in 7-10 days.  BUT, people with this problem say that it is a widely know problem especially with early releases like mine (Novemeber 2000).  Some have got Sony to waive the service fee if you articulate your position in a professional but stern manner.  In other words, don\'t batter the helpdesk rep and make silly rants...  If you do sen your console and go through withdrawls, I certainly do recommend going to the liquor store (if older than 21) and telling the guy at the counter you want a "Jim Beam traveller".  It comes in a plastic bottle so it won\'t break if dropped.  Wait until you get home before opening, then mix with soda or water if you like. Or like me, just keep it in the brown bag and simply wait for the guy in the brown truck to bring back your beloved console.  Whatever you do, do not interact with people.  Becareful with relations with your wife our girlfriend while the console is being repaired because this could cause the cost of your $100 PS2 repair to incur a huge balloon payment in nine months that could will continue for years!  Then you will never get to play PS2 again!

3-in-1 CD Skip fixer
« Reply #23 on: March 07, 2002, 07:02:05 AM »
It is a CD cleaner that comes in a bottle and includes a soft chamois.  I purchased mine at my local game store (not blockbuster!), but a place that only rents, sells, repairs units, games etc.  It\'s about $8-10 and it did help with my disc read problem on the PS2.  I know the owner at this store and he uses it.  For those that might claim he\'s just selling me snake oil, I\'d like to point out that he has given me more in service and discounts that exceeds the $10 I shelled out.  Oh, looking on the bottle there is a website (don\'t know if I\'m allowed to post it here, but if a monitor says OK, I\'ll post it.).  I have used it on music cds that skipped as well and it helped.
