I\'ve been to the beyond3d forums quite a bit over the past few months and there\'s nothing solid about the PS3.

You know, you should be slapped silly for not posting there. :( ;)

...and while there\'s not much official about the PS3, it\'s quite interesting that the patents that have been part of discussion for various months are still in line with what has been revealed at ISSCC! :) Of course, the exact configuration of CELL is still unknown... but at least we have somewhat of knowlegde how the thing should function and where its strengths lie. The only question now is, how many PPEs will be in PS3, how much memory... and lastly, what\'s the deal on Nvidia\'s GPU!

The basic principle behind Cell potential is multiple PPE\'s, right ?

Yeah, odds are high that Sony is only gonna put one PPE in there

Nvidia\'s main role is i think developer tools ; making those for developers\' life as easy as possible.

yeah, exactly. PPEs have an incredible bandwidth 76.8 GB/s FlexIO to othre chips.

The reason why PS3 might only have 1 PPE is because depending on the launch timeframe, 65nm may not be ready and a single PPE at 90nm is quite big already (200+ mm^2). If we want to see a double PPE on (on the same die) PS3, we need 65nm.

Maybe, we might see multiple PPEs, but not on the same die. It\'s all a cost perspective. One thing is clear though... even one PPE should be enough to outperform Xbox\'s CPU by quite a margin (60 - 80 GFLOPs compared to 256 GLOPs of one PPE)

Well, recent news is that Intel managed to get 65nm running. If 65nm is Sony\'s plan I don\'t think they\'ll rush out 90nm Cells.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/10/intel_65nm_cpus/

Also, I don\'t think Sony is worrying all too much about MS, just look at how Xbox graphics are outperforming PS2 graphics for years yet MS can\'t get a grip on Japan sales dominance.

I think the Sony\'s gonna wait with actually producing PS3 ( of course, they\'re gonna show the concept model in May) and get their act straight with 65nm and at least 2 PPE\'s.

Imo Sony is more worried about Nintendo plus it\'s Ati ally. How do you think Nvidia will feel if Sony release a console with Nvidia\'s cooperation in it which isn\'t even up to it\'s minimum potential ? Nah... I don\'t believe for a nanosecond that PS3 will only have 1 single PPE.

quite the contrary actually - I suspect Nvidia will be quite a beast simply because Sony will be using their fabs to produce them, giving them probably a process advantage (if they use 65nm that is).

Potentially, they could be using 65nm for the PPE(s) and the Nvidia GPU. ATi on the other hand should be around 90nm at the best from what I\'ve heard.

In all likelyhood, PS3 will sell regardless of how many PPE make it into the final system... which is why I\'m inclined to believe Sony will go with a less expensive system (1 or 2 PPE depending on the process) and break even in shorter time. Only time will tell though.

The more interesting topic at Beyond3d at the moment isn\'t exactly how many PPEs, but what conifguration we\'re likely to see. Will it be 1 PPE and 512 MB of memory - or 2 PPE with 256 MB? The more powerful the CPU is to be, the less money will be available for other stuff like memory. It\'s all about the perfect balance... and that is the big unknown factor.

Personally, I think textures will only take so far - I\'m more interested in number crunching for great physics and have games like Metal Gear Solid 2 or ZOE2 that have little texture variety but amazing effects like wind, rain etc making up for it.
