Last month, I finally went to the have the playstation 2 fixed and I looked at how he fixed it. He took the eject and reset buttons off the top case. I didn\'t know you can took the ribbon off the case that easily. Then, he switched to a different ribbon because mine ribbon was missing a blue strip.
Then, he unscrewed the two screws shown in red circles in the picture below and he flipped the ps2 over and opened the bottom case. I didn\'t know that you can open the bottom case by unscrewing those two remaining screws. Next to the empty hard disk drive is where the slot is. He inserted the ribbon back into the slot and test it, and presto. The reset and eject button leds turn on. He pushed eject and the tray opens. So that means the ps2 finally works. Finally, he inserted back the reset and eject buttons back to the top case and close the top case and handed it back to me. He charged $15 for about 5 minutes of work which i think is a good deal and that is still a lot cheaper than buying a new ps2.
So, watching a bit of what he did, I learned like two things new there that you can removed the reset/eject buttons off the case easily and you can insert the ribbon back to the ps2 slot by just opening the bottom case by unscrewing the 2 remaining screws.
So, afterward, I went home and opened up the ps2 again and try to adjust the gear on the tray until I can find a spot that the laser can read both dvd and cd discs. After hours of adjusting the gear, I couldn\'t find a spot that can read both the dvd and cd. If I find a spot that can read dvd discs, but it have trouble reading cd discs. If i find a spot that can read cd discs, it have trouble reading dvd discs. Mine ps2 really does have crappy laser pickup. So, I gave up and adjusted the gear back to the factory default spot and inserted back the eject/reset buttons to the case (I broke the tip of this part that hold the buttons on the case but its okay since it doesn\'t broke any electronic parts) and closed it and put the screws back in.
Maybe in the future I might need open the ps2 to readjust the gear again, who knows.
