Well I dont think Soviet Union can be brought as an example considering its extreme nature of the circumstances, the civil war, cold war, etc etc

As for capitalism and the living states under the system, well thats because we live in states that feed from those that fell apart because of capitalism, there is government intervention only as long as people notice issues, and politicians fear of political cost. it\'s still early until people realize and see clearly the problems that are in front of them and the decline of the system hasnt become apparent. But thats because it is still a newborn system and seems "healthy". Monarchies, feudalisms have had far bigger histories than capitalism with long durations of flourishing as well. Someone, depending on the class he belonged to, in these ages could have easily assumed "our states are thriving and our system are the best" when at the same time they were far from being good systems for people. Many times such systems were thriving in ages of corruption, and indirect confinement of human thought and knowledge. Until hundreds of years later they declined, living room for capitalism.

Yet there are too many serious problems considering capitalism is "new", both globally and locally but few of us understand the real state of things because we live in a routine of spectacles, materials, the impression of freedom and choice.

I know I sound pessimistic and I can not convince anyone right now, but I believe the next generations will start experiencing clearly the consequences  "soon".

i kinda see what uni is sayin\'...but i only brought up this situation with china because in that other thread there was talk of china distributing everything from bad tires to the toothpaste tubes bein\' contaminated,..c\'mon toothpaste tubes? you mean to tell me that we can\'t even afford to make our own toothpaste over here? it bulls**t,...i agree with uni in that our future generations are going to be dealing with alot of stressful issues when we\'re in our golden years...it really is troubling that even with all of this technology and advancement, it\'s becoming harder to land a good payin\' job and to make ends meet.

I may catch a little heat for this next comment but bein afri american it\'s always been twice as hard to make it than whites, and even tho that scenario is not as bad as it once was, it still rings true, tho it\'s becoming harder for EVERYBODY as a whole...I especially feel for my kids, because the way things are goin\' there\'s not going to be any real opportunities for them unless they stay headfirst in school *which is something i plan for my kids to be doin\' anyway*.Even tho grants and things of that nature are available, college in general can run an average person tens of thousands of dollars.

I just hate whenever the prez states that the economy is doin great when it\'s anything but....thousands of jobs are bein created monthly?..what? that new walmart or mcdonalds down the street?......show me some real jobs that you can actually support yourself and family on...

China has so much cheap labor and can exploit economies of scale so much due to huge quantities of production that cost per unit is highly small.  Also they rely in quantity than quality farther reducing cost.

As a result I believe chinese products are so less costy in US even if we add import costs, that it can be sold at lower prices than domestic products and still make profit.

The firms in US are trying to hire cheap labor to reduce costs to compete. And we are talking about illegal immigrants, and immigrants from poor areas. This has social impact too in the US and it can not be measured by any economist or stupid politician. Not that he would care to reveal. No government is willing to inform in detail the citizens about the negatives. Besides they dont differ than any other opportunist. They want to be re-elected.

Also about something clips said, diplomas are getting weaker and weaker at securing a safe and high paying position. Due to high competition, more and more are betting in colleges and universities. The more people end up with diplomas the easier they are to find, the more expensive they become as labor demanding higher paying jobs and the less demanded they become. As a result more "scientists" or educated people will be finding normal to accept lower paying jobs to get a job.

When decades ago getting a high-level degree was an achievement and ensured a high position, today it is a routine and a normal.

As education generates costs, and the less the gains from it in terms of income, this in the future may mean that the people who will be mostly willing to pay thousands of dollars for higher education and studies will be those that had money anyways. Higher class wealthy citizens.

When the US is starting to lose economic power, I am sure we are going to see even more problems that expand to an international level. Expect conflicts between US interests and other country interests (Middle East, China, Europe, Russia). This has already begun with countries in the middle east, like the U.A.E who are considering to either abandon the US dollar or use a mixture of dollar and euro at setting the value of their currency.

Expect wars too.

if the economy is doin\' so great Mr. Bush, then explain this....

people can\'t even afford to keep their homes....which was supposedly the "american dream" to own one. Granted some folk get into mortgages thinking they can handle the mortgage when they really can\'t, but overall it seems that property taxes are skyrocketing faster than people\'s cost of living raises company\'s are givin their employees to keep up with inflation, which at this point has been really poor.

People can\'t keep their homes because they are buying homes they can\'t afford.  Point blank.  People were buying interest only during the housing boom and selling quickly.  Now they are stuck with a payment or multiple payments they can\'t afford.  boo hoo hoo.

I mean I have two house payments right now.  I\'m throwing away about 1500 a month on a house that is just sitting there.  Am I crying about it?  No.  Am I getting screwed by the housing downslide?  Yeah.  Probably.  Although building my house became cheaper because crews were needing work so the money I\'ve lost on my other house I saved while building this one.

Don\'t get me started on property taxes. The taxes in my town just jumped up 1000 bucks a year. It seems everywhere in Jersey taxes are going up. I\'m getting kinda nervous for when I get out of school. I\'m not gonna be able to live in Jersey. I\'m a Jersey boy for life but I think I\'m gonna have to move. No way I\'ll be able to afford it without living in Newark or something. The economy was good but things seem to be getting to out of hand. I was making a dollar over minimum wage not too long ago. Last year, minimum wage went up to 7.15 and my company couldn\'t afford to give me a raise. Everywhere else I worked too only could pay me minimum wage or just a bit above it.

To add to what vid said, people are losing their homes because of ARM\'s.  Their interest rates aren\'t fixed and anyone who gets and adjustable rate mortgage is asking for trouble.
