Yep! Over Heating! Put you Playstation 2 on a Surge and when your finish playing just turn off the Surge. That will stop it from getting pre heated.  But now it sounds like your fan burn out. Just get another one put it in your self if you can.

When the PS2 is left in Standby Mode, is there a little fan inside that keeps the thing cool? or does the hardware not need cooling while in Standby mode? I always turn my system completly off after every use, therefore you don\'t have to worry about overheating or hardware failure. I know the PS2 might be designed to stay on continously, but you could never be too cautious. BTW for you clean freaks out there, I don\'t think your PS2 will benefit very much from cleaning the dust off. My PC is extremely dusty inside and still works like a champ. I wouldn\'t obsess about the dust, the PS2 could be fully covered with layers of dust, its not going to effect gameplay.

There is no need for the fan in stand-by mode

I have placed my hand on  my PS2 after having it in stand-by mode for a week and its a cool as the air around it.

yep standbye mode is like having a clock on, doesnt heat it up, your fan is just jacked up, i have played games for hours on end, i think 5 total non stopr then stoping for 1/2 an hour and playing 3 more hours :) and it doesnt over heat, its your fan
\"So are you going to kill her off?\"
Are you insane! I love her character, she stays.
\"The only thing loves done is put you in this position, I say kill her off!\"
Yeah, but you say a lot of things..
and how does that work....  You\'re a bicycle..

Holy hell !
That sounds like a fan prob. Alright. Maybe you
shouldn\'t have cleaned it with the paintbrush.
These are known to loose "hair" ; it probably got
into the fan\'s mechanism.
It\'s actually the same  with hair dryers : if a hair
gets stuck in the machine will overheat it self and
eventually self-destruct.
Go call Sony for a fan repair/replacement !

BTW. I don\'t really clean my PS2 ( after play I just put a blanket over the PS2 to protect it against dust )and it stays cool as a Penguin on an Alaskan iceberg.

Yea I used to put a blanket over it but then I stopped. I think when I get my PS2 back, I\'ll start doing it again.
