Please help... important, PS2 is dying...
« on: March 05, 2001, 08:07:30 AM »
Okay this morning I cleaned out the back of my PS2 with a paintbrush. Then i started playing TimeSplitters and in the middle of the game a black screen came up and the rd lioght started flashing (where the reset button is) I felt it, it was really hot. I put my hand in the back and there  WAS NO AIR BLOWING OUT. I could see it was getting red inside so i turned it off, what do i do???!?!?!?!?!

Don\'t leave your PS2 on standby for a start , and if possible remove the plug from the wall too, that why there is no pwer to pre heat it, plus you should tell us how long you play for at a  time , i.e average amount of hours per day, may be you have take a break from the hard core gaming after 48 hours of solid play ;).

actually i only play about 1 a day, at that. But  i dunno i wont turn it on until tomorrow morning again and see if its cooled down, in the mean time i\'ll unplug it and put something over it so it doesn\'t get anymore dust than it needs.

sounds like a heat sink problem, or it could be the fan is defective thus leading to a low air flow rate, there by causing the CPU to overheat, thats what happened to my PC , the Fan was running slower "infact Very slowly and my CPU keept over heating", if it is the fan then repair should be easy enough, but take it to a registered tech to get it fixed "if you can".

also have you done any DIY since you have got your PS2 ?

it could be some dust on the inside of the PS2, that is causing the heating problem.

You could try using a can of compressed air but if the fan seems to be dead Id say best bet is to box the machine up and get a replacement..

Maybe the hairs of the brush came through the holes and destroyed something inside, I suggest you have it repair

custom heatsink
« Reply #7 on: March 05, 2001, 09:32:50 AM »
I would build a custom heatsink.  Cut a hole in the top of it and come up with some radiator liquid cool heat sink attachment,  Now that sounds cool.

Imagine a little radiator sitting on the outside of your PSX2 cooling the thing..  :D

Actually there is a company that makes external fan/heatsinks for the ps1.

All I can say is I hope your machine is still under warranty.  More proof on the sh!tty design of the PS2.

I talked to an electonic-guy the other day. He was quite concerned with the heatsink / cooler in PS2 - he said it was underdimensioned and looked as if it wouldn\'t last long. I guess he was right. :(

sorry to hear that m8.
i know the ps2 can deal with a lot of gameplay coz when i was playing final fantasy. the ps2 was left turned on for about 24 hours solid.
i have ha no problems with mine at all and all i do is clean the top of the console with a cloth every 2 weeks or so. You are probably one of the unlucky ones- get your ps2 replaced.

No, you misunderstood. He wasn\'t talking about my PS2, but his own and every single PS2 in general. He said it didn\'t look as if it would last very long.

Yeah the hardware does heat up alot and the HD won\'t make things any better.
And the heatsink and fan do look fragile.Does anyone know how many transistors the EE and GS have?

Well then

Since hearing these stories and more I think Its about time to design an external heat seat for the PS2.

There is a company that sells a raditor type thing for the AMD chips that retails for about 100 - 200 bucks.  I think I could design something to adapt it to the heat sync in the PS2 to cool it.  That would be cool.

Relax people!! Geez!

It sounds like FakinKubuss f\'ed up his fan. Of course with no fan the PS2 will probably overheat, as will any high heat device (Emporer).

Pull the fan out. Get the model # of the fan. Replace it.

Problem solved:)
