It\'s the principle of it. I wouldn\'t complain if the game cost $70/80 for unlimited online play. It\'s the charging me after I\'ve already paid for it part I\'m against.

You know, I see everyone complaining about this and it only re-enforces my theory that online gaming for consoles just isn\'t going to work, at least not in this time. Console gamers don\'t want to pay $50 for a game then subscribe to play it online.

I for one am willing to pay to play, as long as I\'m getting my money\'s worth (paying for servers, 24 hour online GMs, good low latency, no cheating/bugs, and a huge/fun game).

The problem with the "extra" amount for a game is it\'s a one time thing, and if they say "free online gaming" on the box (ie diablo 2), then they have enough to buy a certain number of servers, and then that\'s it, they start loosing money.  Diablo II has horrible latency because it poorly used the server side programming (especially at release), and they couldn\'t afford to expand realms untill more people bought it (and now there are more people online).  I paid 120 cdn for a special edition of D2, the normal edition was 100, and most games here are 60-70.  But it is still mostly unplayable until after 1:00 am, or before 4:00 pm.  Would I pay a monthly fee for it?  No.  But if I did, you can bet I would expect 24 hour playability, and resolution to the duping/hostility bug issues a lot faster than was done.

MMORPG worlds, however, AC or EQ for instance, do appeal to me.  They can be so much bigger than any single disk RPG can be, with real person interaction, great (neverending-expanding) quests, more items, etc, etc.  I think you guys will be surprised at how many people all over the world will be willing to pay a small, reasonable fee to play FFXI online with hundreds of other people.

Yes, datamage, I almost always defend Sega. But this argument is an easy one, you dont have to be a real genious to figure this argument out.

Also, you don\'t see me defending Sega on this pay to play thing do you?

well games like TM: Black online or GT3 online I will assume will be non pay

Just these massive online games will be pay.

I still think it will be successful but they need to find awya to make it more affordable

Again I would rather pay $75 for these pay to play online games and not have to fork out another cent then pay monthly

The only time a game can justify being pay by the month is when it is

(1) Massively online: That means server side storage of everything important.  Huge area (so that it is as big or bigger than a DVD game could be - Only graphics/textures, kernel, and sound are on the CD).
(2) Massively expensive to maintain:  Lots of GMs, maintenance, servers, techies.
(3) Bug, cheat, and latency free: This is soooo important if you want enjoyable gameplay.

Those of you who thing the "one time" extra 20 dollar cost is feasable for games of this magnitude should read my thread above.  I do, however, agree that games like GT3 or TM: Black should have totally free online features.  Nothing in them justifies a continuing fee, beyond say a small (2-5 buck) extra cost in the store.

That was your first mistake. It wasn\'t an argument. Since it was something against SEGA you assumed it was.

You said \'Though it\'s funny that Diablo II is more popular than PSO and Blizzard doesn\'t charge for Battle.net.\'

and then

\'You take every chance you get to defend Sega\'

I wasn\'t defending Sega, I was just making note of the fact that, yes, I will defend Sega on most issues. This argument was not about Sega until you stated the latter of two opinions. You don\'t have to be a genius to figure out why Diablo2 has more users. I simply compared userbases of the two games as a little jab, you made the statement that I was defending Sega. I didn\'t make the pointless and easily shot down comment, you did.

Yup but I guess you didn\'t understand my point. Here, I\'ll be blunt.

Diablo 2 = More Users = More Servers = More money to run.

PSO = The opposite.
