Dear member,

This email is to notify you of a modification to the Acceptable Use
Policy for the Telstra BigPond(tm) broadband Internet Freedom Plan.

In response to member feedback about the Acceptable Use Policy and
the need for further clarity on what is considered acceptable usage,
Telstra BigPond has now addressed this issue.

From 5 July 2001, the Freedom Plan for cable and ADSL customers will
have a defined allowance of three (3) gigabytes (GB) usage a month.  
This change only relates to Freedom Plan customers, not to customers
on volume based plans.

For the large majority of Freedom Plan customers, this allowance will
not impact on their current usage patterns and will provide them with
improved network performance. This is because around five percent of
users take up 35 percent of total bandwidth at any one time. This
group places a severe burden on the network which greatly reduces
performance for most customers.

Also, Telstra has received many requests from customers for a defined
usage allowance under the Acceptable Use Policy.

The three GB allowance per month represents something like 600 MP3
songs (average 5Mb per song) or 300 two to three minute MPEG videos a
month.  If you use the Net mainly for email or surfing and reasonable
music and video downloads, you should not be affected at all.  Gamers
should be able to enjoy up to 300 hours a month of broadband
multi-user gaming.

Initially, the allowance will be managed using the existing
Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). From around October this year, members
will have two options to manage their allowance;

 Capping: Once the three GB allowance limit is reached, customers
 will still have access to emails and telstra.com.

 Additional usage: Once the three GB allowance limit is reached,
 customers can choose to download additional data at a chargeable
 MB rate.

Before the options are introduced, Telstra will provide a usage meter
that will allow users to effectively monitor their monthly usage.

Once the options become available, people will be able to swap
between the capped and additional usage options (with one month\'s
notice) so if more than 3 GB a month is required, the plan will allow
for charging above the three GB allowance. There will be effective
communication processes in place to warn members if they approach the
limit.

In the meantime, the three GB limit will be managed according to the
existing Acceptable Use Policy process.

Further changes are being made to the Acceptable Use Policy to provide
greater clarity across a number of separate issues. You will receive
further correspondence confirming these changes shortly.

I feel like taking out my bayonet whenever I see an announcement authored by "The ______ Team"  I can\'t believe they\'re doing this to a customer that pays $83 per month.  Hopefully there are other competitors available to you.  You\'ve GOT to dump these greedy bastards.  They must pay the cost for screwing their customers.

Yeah, Telstra charges waaaayyy too much. I know its good to keep your margins realistic, especially in this climate (One.Tel crash), but hot dang, Telstra\'s might just be a bit too realistic. If the big T wasn\'t as big as it was, the big O (Optus) would totally outclass it.

AARRGH, you\'ll all be pleased to know that i have the same ISP as souly here. And we\'d be paying the same amount everymonth. This is so screwed up.... telstra is just a LAME ass ISP for cable service. Average speeds are anywhere between 15kb/sec -  30kb/sec. When you\'re lucky you get up to around 60, which is the MAX telstra allows.

Then you get optus cable which gets as high as 400kb/sec

Well, I think it sucks. Not that I have Telstra cable or ASDL myself but I have a few mates that live in the city that do and they arn\'t too happy with this new bull**** plan... Even if Telstra roll out cable or ADSL in my area I wouldn\'t get it!

that sucks here if you pay 83 bucks a month you get up in the 1000s kb/s - i mean come on and they have restrictions to how much you can download - well screw them - i would to another provider with a quickness

man that really sucks.  I feel for you man when I had my compaq it f***** up my modem but now I have a new pc and cable rules but I\'d leave the service it I were you.. try to shop around.

DAMN,, the other cable service we have over here is Optus@home, and you get UNCAPPED speed, and UNCAPPED downloads, for what I thought was 20 dollars more expensive. It turns out Optus MAY be cheaper also, it\'s rooted

With telstra cable, the average download speed as I said is between 20-30

it can get as low as 10, and the max is 60

with optus, the AVERAGE is 400.... it\'s just ridiculous

What the hell? Who is gonna download more then 3 gig a month? If you do, you use the Internet WAY too much, or you use it for the WRONG reasons, because you SHOULDN\'T be downloading files that large, I mean, come on, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOWNLOADING?

I only pay $55 a month for Telstra cable at 560k or whatever the hell it is!

I\'m not complaining, its damn fast!

I download. Demos. Shareware. Freeware. Movies. Info. and updates for my programs and system programs.

I aslo have another person on my connection. we pay for 2 ips. But knowning telstra. they will HALF our downloads.

U see. Just BROWSING the net downloads stuff into your cache.  3gig /2 for 2 people = 1.5 gig a month..

now that\'s about 50meg download a day per person..

I download more then that just browsing.. It\'s B@LLSH@T.

If u have cable and u don\'t download stuff. Then why bother with cable.. Seems stupid to me. Just get 56k connection for your browsing.
I\'m always downloading demos or movies. Being clips etc. (not of porn) normaly of demostrations and game clips.

I also download heaps of stuff to do with MUGEN..  a 2d fighter game maker.   I\'ve download 800meg in the last 2 weeks just for that alone.

Also, They cap your SPEED to the net.. say there\'s a t3 connection for a court (being mine) and only 5 people are on the connection. That\'s not much being used. So there BS on people using up other peoples bandwidth is a load of crap. They CAP your speed. How can u be using there bandwitdh..

telstra.... u pricks.

I love paying $72.55 a month and having a 3 gig cap 64k/16k cap :rolleyes: While Optus users have 7 times more freedom.
