First impressions/ review of Dark Cloud "long"
« on: June 11, 2001, 06:47:10 AM »
Before i start my review i must say that the only reason i got this game was because of what the people on this forum were saying about it, if not, i wouldn\'t have gotten it.I have had this game since friday and im on the 3rd dungeon level. 8

Controls: 8-10
the controls scheme for Dark Cloud is very easy to use, to lock on to the opponent, once you get in range just press the circle button and vuala, you are locked on and  in full 360 realtime battle, then its basically pressing x to strike and pressing R1 to block, nothing special, but it does the job nicley :), there are also duals, where it\'s kinda like bust a move, you have to press the right button sequences at the right time to beat the dual its pretty intersting but there are only a few so far.

Gameplay: 8-10
This game cannot actually be an RPG because of the features it has, it reminds me of Diablo because of the dungeon crawling, and reminds me of Zelda because of the lock on feature, then it reminds me of an RPG becuase you can build up your character and his weapons. so i have created a genre for this game to fit in, i call it: RPDC.. Role Playing Dungeon Crawler.
you start out as a boy named Toan who is at his village festival when all the sudden the dark Genie destroy\'s everything.just as you are about to be crushed under a fallign windmill, you are transported to a black room where you meet the fairy king, he tell you that he has stored all the city\'s the Dark genie tried to destroy in spheres called "Atla" you have to collect all the Atla in order to bring the city\'s back to thier full splendor, from there it\'s all dungeon crawling thrue dungeons 15+ levels for each city, the dungeons take a fairly long time to defeat them, the first 1 took me about 6 hours including the routine stops to rebuild the city.
i am actually find this game very enjoying, the reviews under rated it in my opinion, even though the levels are big, they do not get repetative.each dungeon is in a different enviorment with different monsters.

Being able to upgrade your sword is a plus indeed, you can raise the attribute, raise the elemental power, or the strengh against certain foes everytime your weapon levels up, when your weapon reaches level 5 you can synthesis it, and attached it to another weapon, 60% of your old weapons attributes etc. will be transfered to the other sowrd you equip the sysnthesis sphere with.    A grip of peopll have complained about thier swords breaking often and always being broke, well i dontk now what they are doing becuas ei have 0 problems with this, my sword has not broken at all since i started this game i have built it up 2 times already. abd i have about 8,000 gold.

And last but not least the Georama feature, 1nce you collect the Atla, you can start rebuilding your city, this is a pretty easy task at first but as later cit\'ys come it\'s a bit more challenging. as you build buildings and add peopel to them you can make the city however you want, but you will have to ask the people that live in those houses what they need in order to finish them and put them in the right spot.

oh and htis game has 0 loading times!

Graphics: 7-10
The graphic\'s in his game are not all that bad, in other reviews i have read they complain about a grip of flickering and jaggies, i have not noticedy flickering but i have seen a few jaggies here and there. the backrounds tend to blur from distances but it doesn\'t hurt anything, the character models looks great, they are very nicely well done and look jaggieless. exept the dark genie that is.
The enviorments look cool, they are a bit bland and could have been livend up a bit by adding more stuff, the water in this game looks pretty cool, as do the element effects that you have your sword using such as the lighting or ice, when you get thier power high they look sweet.

Sound: 6-10
Thia game needed voice over\'s!!!
other than that it sounds pretty cool, the music is nice and not all fruity. alote of backround sounds, sucha s insects and stuff, the enemy\'s make their own sound like gurnt\'s etc. but all in all theycould have made it better

Cons:
i havent foud all that many con\'s to worry about exept that soemtimes the camera angles can be a bit aggrivating at times, and the characters don\'t have voices. and the bit of jaggies, if they delayed this game for so long, then why couldn\'t they have fixed these problems??

Final Score: 8-10

Final Word
i Have found this game to be more enjoyable then i have imagined, i didn\'t even expect it to be this cool, from the reviews i read and bad stuff i heard, i decided to give it a try anyways, and i love it, if you like dungeon crawlers, and RPG\'s.. RPDC\'s :p then try this game out and im sure youll like it.

EXTRA

here is a picture of the second newest Evangelion DVD i got! if knowone knows what evangelion is, it\'s the best anime series i have ever watchedd in my entier life, go check it out, oh and they based the enemy\'s on Z.O.E. from the angels in evangelion, cool huh, the box art isn\'t an angel they are called evas and were created by man to destroy the angels, angels are beings sent from God to cause the third impact "the end of the world" awesome huh. here is the box art, hope you like it

Thanks, unknown. I think it\'s a must for all RPG fans because there are many RPGs for PS2 but not many great ones. Maybe it\'s not a perfect game but you cannot expect a game like FF.

sell your fishing bait for around 200 a pop.  I made mucho money on the first city doing that.  Also, the blurring feature in the backgrounds can be turned off in the options menu. Haven\'t tried it though

exxaacctlllyyy :), i also sell all the weapons i dont use as well as gems, and they reason why i have never broken my sword is because i have an auto repair in my active pouch at ALL times. but i have\'t had to use it yet, i just repair very often

and im gonna try turning off the backround blurring to see what happens

I really enjoy the fishing, so I guess I\'ll just be poor:)

Yeah, I\'m curious about the "soft focus" too. The real-time clock is cool. Time goes on even while you\'re in the dungeons.

A word to the wise:  this game is extremely addictive.  It just gobbled up most of my weekend and is bound to get much more of my time when opportunity allows.  Hellacious game!  :{>

Before the fight, start building up Ruby\'s rings until you get something strong like the Mobius Ring or the Secret Armlet.  After getting one of those, start maxing out its Attack, MP, and Holy stats.   Once those are full, find some Stamina Drinks and add them to your inventory.  After you find about a half dozen of those, you\'re ready to begin the actual fight.  Also make sure you\'ve got a few Premium Chickens (or Bananas) and a couple Resurrection Powders with you, just in case things don\'t go as planned.
When it\'s time to start smacking the Dark Genie\'s face around, you should switch to Ruby and change her weapon\'s attribute to Holy, and then give her a Stamina Drink.  Once you do that, you\'ll probably start dealing 150 damage with each blast, and taking none yourself.  When the Stamina wears off, use another Stamina Drink and repeat the process.  The Dark Genie should fall in a couple minutes.
