Early Hands on! Silent Hill 2: WOW!!
« on: June 17, 2001, 12:04:39 AM »

Thanks to PS Nation.  This game is going to rock!! This info got me scared!! No other game will even be made like this!! :D
Movie http://216.234.188.15/previews/movies/silenthill2-2.mov

Thanks to Konami\'s excellent and on the ball PR team, we have been able to grab a copy of the E3 demo of Silent Hill 2 for the PlayStation 2. The short but sweet demo has given us a clear indication of the goal that Konami is aiming for.
The demo begins with us on the first floor of the Brookhaven Hospital that creeped us so out in the original. If you\'ve seen the E3 trailer then you\'ll know that the game retained its dark gothic look. In fact the game\'s use of lighting and dark makes it near impossible for us to capture movies for you to watch [ED. - Believe us we tried but all movies come out looking just too dark for the web].

The lead character James is not without help, though, as we had a pocket flashlight to help navigate the dark hallways of the dusty cobbwebbed hospital. We have to admit that the flashlight works incredibly well as Konami has given gamers the ability to control James use of the flashlight independantly from his body. This allows you to use the right stick in combination with the L2 button to point the light in any direction. James will even move his head in the direction that the light is aiming. We had more than our fair share of goosebumps and chills as we explored the bloodied hallways from top to bottom. Konami has really captured the look of an abandoned, desolate hospital like I never could have imagined.

James also started with a handgun, a radio for detecting monsters, a wooden plank full of nails and an energy drink. We imagine he will start with even less in the final game but for our demo we were able to blast the sickening monsters right off the bat. Everything is handled from a menu system that works well albeit a bit slow to load. We are sure the slow delay in loading is just a result of this being a demo.

The game\'s map also helped us navigate the rosin hallways that are full of closed off doors. We had little problem knowing which way to go as most of the doors that were closed had been already marked for us on the map.

As we made our way up each floor of the hospital we were faced with a few of those sickening walkers that look like something out of a Marilyn Manson video. They weren\'t much of a challenge but they did have a nice scatter move on the ground once you believe you\'ve taken them down. They also sprayed this very gross looking puce colored matter at James face in a final attempt to eat away at James. Ewwwww.

The rest of the demo had me trying to traverse the dark hallways looking for clues. I found a stained rubber room with a riddle scribbled in blood on the wall. This ultimately led me to a locked box that was opened with the information from the bloodied riddle. Inside was, well I don\'t want to spoil everything, but let\'s say it was very interesting.

Not much of the small bit of story I gathered made sense and I really didn\'t get to interact with any of the other characters. However the gameplay didn\'t stride too far from the original but that\'s fine with me since I really enjoyed the former. If this demo is any indication, then Silent Hill 2 could be the biggest survival horror title on the PS2 period.

YYYYEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Man, that\'s one of the things I LOVED about the original Silent Hill. Realistic, yet BADASS weaponry! I mean really, how often do you just find a Sub Machinegun, Minigun, or Rocket Launcher just laying around your town in case of accidental Biohazard? That\'s not horror.. that\'s just massacre. Real horror is inspired by knowing 12 of those THINGS are comming down the hall at you, and all you have is a kitchen knife and baseball bat with a nail in it. That\'s SURVIVAL horror, not small one-man army scirmishs like some other games.
