My EA Sports Rugby Review
« on: June 18, 2001, 08:35:16 PM »
I still havent got it yet but I played it quite alot today.

It is really fun but it\'s nowhere near perfect, but it\'s the best rugby game I\'ve played.

Just a few things that annoy me. Players seem to be too even in ability\'s. For example, I played NZ vs Japan and Lomu had trouble running over his man. and we all know this isnt the case.
He kept getting tackled by him. You could understand this if it was Joe Roff or Ben Tune tackling him, but this was just some unkown Japenese player.

Another thing is that when running the ball in the backs the defence tends to drift across to cover the men outside, just like in real life, BUT a lot of the time you can just step inside and there\'s no one there covering so you can make an easy 20 meters nearly everytime. I did this against South Africa. I did it from out infront of my own posts, gained 20 meters and set up the next ruck. I just continued to do this getting 20 -30 meters each time until I scored.

The last thing I\'m going to complaiin about is the speed of the players. One time I had Christian Cullen with the ball and all I had to do was run around a prop to score a try. He would do this everytime in reallife but in this game when you go to tackle the player goes into his tackle animation and speeds up so he managers to catch ythe player which he is suppoesed to be faster than! So Cullen got outrun by a prop.

This also happened to me when I used Paulse from SA. He got run down by a lock!

Other than these things it\'s a very good game. If they can fix these up for a future title (I hope) and add some more options then it would be an awesome game.

My opinion of it is that if you love rugby, BUY THIS GAME. You will get annoyed by little things in it but overall it\'s the best rugby game out on any system.
If your just a casual fan of rugby I suggest you rent before you buy.

Graphics: 6/10 It looks good. It\'s just plain. Not as much detail as Madden

Sound 7/10 Great sound effects like when they hit the rucks and mauls, but the commentry is very bad so you will end up turning that off within an hour.

Gameplay 8/10 I\'ve gone into detail above. Just a few little problems hold this game back from being great.

Lifespan 8/10 If you love rugby, this will last a long time. It\'s just a pity it doesnt have the Super 12. This would of added to it.

Overall 8/10 Good first effort by EA. If they update this series every year the future for rugby games looks bright.

Thanks for the review!!

If they wanto make it real then they must make the following changes:

1.)  Make Butch James (SA) tackle without using his arms (suppose he\'s not in the game)

2.) When there is a penalty kick, John Eales (Aus) must be able to jump for the ball underneath the crossbar.

3.) Jonah Lomu (NZ) must run over the players

4.) Percy Montgomery (SA) must miss all the high balls, be scared of Jonah Lomu and play with a hair brush in his socks!! (Here in SA we really hate him)

5.) Ron Cribb (NZ) must be able to throw punches without the ref seeing him.  Same goes for Keith Woods (Irish)

6.) Jhonny Wilkinson (Eng) should not miss any of his kicks, neither should Neil Jenkins (Wales)

7.) The French should be able to beat you in the second half, even if they are 40 points down.

8.) All African teams (besides SA) should lose to the other countries by at least 50 points.

9.) When playing against Argentina, you should actually play on a soccer field with the field markings still visible.

10.) ADD THE SUPER 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A word of advice:

In the working world there is only two ships that sink: 1.) a Battle ship, and 2.) Partnership
