From http://ps2.ign.com/  Sony Plans For Larger PS2 Hard Drive

But you\'ll have to wait until next year to get it. Find out all of the juicy details inside.

June 18, 2001

Sony\'s 40 gigabyte hard disk is due out in Japan next month, and when coupled with the PS2 broadband adapter, it should usher in a new stage of PS2 gaming. This hard disk attachment is apparently just the start of Sony\'s plans, though.

Japan\'s Mainichi Shimbun reports that Sony plans to release a new, higher capacity version of the hard drive every year, while keeping the price fixed. The paper would not delve into details regarding the size of the increments.

We have yet to hear specific comments on the matter from Sony, but as the hard drive approaches, Sony\'s plans should become clearer. Check back soon.

That\'s a pretty smart marketing ploy.  Memory prices fluctuate all the time (mostly prices go down).  I think the incriment of memory each year would be dependant on the market.  I guess that way we won\'t be like:

"Well if I spend a lot of money I\'ll get the most memory, but I could spend a little less, but it\'s less memory, aaaaah!"

Now it would just be:

"Well that one is cheaper, but it\'s LAST YEAR\'S model.  I\'m gonna be hip and get this years hard drive!"

I\'m feeling better about it already!
