Sony and Sega increase ties with each other..........
« on: June 20, 2001, 05:07:55 AM »
Sony will handle the European distribution of games designed by Japanese videogame software maker Sega Corp for PlayStation 2, Sega said on today, reflecting Sega\'s efforts to bolster ties with former rivals.

Under the agreement, the European unit of Sony Computer Entertainment (SEC), Sony\'s gaming arm - once one of Sega\'s rivals in the game hardware battle - will manufacture, distribute and market the games in five European languages.

Sega has been intensifying efforts to expand global software sales after its high-profile exit from the unprofitable Dreamcast game console business earlier this year.

Sega is currently developing seven game titles including a new version of its blockbuster Virtua Fighter series for PlayStation 2, a Sega spokesman said, adding that at least two of these titles will be released before Christmas.

"Since we do not have our own marketing network in Europe, we decided to have SCE to handle distribution of our games for PlayStation 2," he said.

Sega\'s game software for Dreamcast will continue to be handled by a European distributor, he added.

Sega, known for its "Sonic The Hedgehog" game character, and the world\'s leading home videogame console maker, Sony, have recently been working closely as part of Sega\'s broad partner-making efforts after a painful exit from Dreamcast.

Earlier this month, the two companies said they plan to enable users of their consoles to play videogames via the Internet.

In February, they, together with Japanese game software maker Namco Ltd, announced a collaboration on game distribution via high-capacity broadband networks to arcade game centers.

Shares in Sega on today closed up 1.64 per cent at 1,980 yen prior to the news, while Sony\'s shares slid 1.14 per cent to 8,660 yen.

What about that rumored Nintendo/Sega RPG?  Sega is certainly sleeping in a lot of beds.

With the announcement you mentioned, this rumor, and it looking more and more like the Gamecube  P.S.O. will in fact be O. Sega is in a damn fine position to be the number 1 third party developer.  Maybe they\'ll finally get the respect they deserve.

they are a THIRD party, I dont know why some of you havent grasped this yet. 3rd parties make deals with 1st parties. 3rd parties make for multiple consoles. And sadly enough for everyone else, Sega is gonna be the largest 3rd party out there!

PS2 and X-Box are definetly getting the most Sega developers, while for some reason, Yuji has gone directly to GC.

WRONG! NGC has every pretty much every Sega developer there is developing games for NGC. Sonic Team, Amusement Vision, AM2, and Visual Concepts are all developing for NGC. And I also think that Smilebit and Hitmaker are developing for them too...I\'ll look into this.

yes he is right, GC will get all the sonic goodies! thats why most segafans are going to Gc instead of xbox. I personally see AM2 working together with sony, yu suzuki stated that he was very excited about ps2\'s capibilities and he wanted to to "unlock" its powers. I hope seeing shenmue 3 on ps2 :) chances are slim though :(

gimme a link Jumpy. Because as the last list goes, only Sonic Team and MAYBE one other Sega team had announced games or interest in GC, most of the games are for X-Box and PS2, dwarfing GC\'s.

Sega has confirmed that they have begun development on GameCube. Sonic Team, Amusement Vision and Sega AM R&D Department 2 have been working on games since last fall. Sonic Team created Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star Online, Samba de Amigo, and Chu Chu Rocket. AM2 created the Daytona USA, Shen Mue and is currently working on Virtua Fighter 4 and Shenmue 2. Sega is expected to show several GameCube games at E3. Sega may show NFL 2K2 for GameCube at E3. Sega also mentioned that Sonic Team may create a GameCube version of Phantasy Star Online.

And this was way back in April! PlanetGameCube has something like this more recently but I couldn\'t find it. Also, this site is very reliable. Notice the part where it says Sonic Team might port PSO to NGC before it was confirmed.

And his a link confirming Visual Concepts.

http://www.planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item&id=1709

Lets look at the confirmed developers for each system now.

PS2= AM2, VC, and Hitmaker.(I think)
Xbox-Smilebit, VC, and Hitmaker.
NGC- VC, AM2, Sonic Team, and Amusement Vision.

Who has the most- GameCube.

i said announced games, in which case only Monkey Ball and PSO have been announce...only Sonic Team.

For X-Box, you also forgot:

Wow, Sega Rosso.

for PS2 you forgot:

Overworks.

you can\'t post some aol stuff and expect that it be accepted as fact. Post some IGN stuff and you will see. GC\'s announced Sega games is very low compared to PS2 and X-Box

Those developers I named must be interestedin NGC or else they wouldn\'t be developing for it. Bleh!

Who the hell are these guys...

Anyways, now it\'s my turn to ask you for a link.

Here\'s the PGC link, a site which is just as reliable as IGNcube.

http://www.planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item&id=1624

Also, now I shall remind you that Nintendo doesn\'t usually let developers talk or even announce their games. Sega already confirmed  A LOOOOONG time ago that they were bringing 11 or games to NGC but only 3 have been announced so far. Monkey Ball, PSOV2, and Virtua Striker 3. Don\'t make me search for the link!
