Dual Layer DVD Playback
« on: June 26, 2001, 12:04:46 AM »
Hi,

I\'ve searched the forums in this message board, but did not get the answer I\'m looking for.

We have a PS2 installed in our SUV.  It serves as a DVD player and a video game console to entertain the kids on those long drives.  Anyway, we just came back from an extended drive.  The PS2 performed flawlessly on the video game mode.  However, while playing dual layer DVD movies, the PS2 seems to freeze during the transition between the first and the second layer.  We get an "Unable to Read Disc" message.   We tried multiple dual layer movies, i.e. Disney\'s Emperor\'s New Groove, Disney\'s Hercules, Romeo Must Die, Eagle\'s Hell Freezes Over, none of these movies were able to play through the second layer.  Does anyone know if this is a defect in our PS2, or a bug on the early machines?  This was the first time we were able to fully use the PS2 since it was installed last Feb 01.

Thanks,
Raymond

all dvd players trigger some sort of pause when switching layers, so it is abnormal that it "freezes".

Thanks for the reply.  Our PS2 will not play through at all.  I guess it\'s a defect.  Nevertheless, I\'ll buy a new one and keep the non-DVD playing one as a game console for the house.  Again, thank you.

If you own an expensive DVD player, no pause is experienced.

Those are the same symptoms my machine experienced in late December/early January.  Eventually you won\'t be able to play PS1 games on it either.  And probably the DVDs you have that are giving you grief are gold-backed.

I believe the original PS2s that went out for sale had faulty lens-lasers in them.  That\'s what was replaced in my unit.  It may never give you any other problems, but if you see performance continuing to drop, you can almost be positive this is happening.

Unfortunately, the car stereo installer opened the PS2 case in the process of installing it in our SUV.  I\'m pretty sure Sony will not warranty this unit.  I\'ve read somewhere about returning the unit to Walmart.  The problem is with a broken seal, Walmart might not take it as well.  We\'ll just hope that it will continue reading PS games.

I seriously doubt Wal-Mart is smart enough to check that, but I guess there\'s always a chance.  Anyway there\'s another thread about someone returning their PS2 to Wal-Mart that just popped up yesterday.

If your doing an exchange they should not give you hard time....

Play dumb...

But there is something definetly wrong with your player....  Its normal for a slight pause but not something that should lock the system up...  Return it, or at least try..

I like that playing dumb idea.  I\'ll send my wife to exchange it. :)  Thank God she does not go to this forum. :)  It will be our little secret.
