Next step in handhelds...

Most of us have had a chance to buy, play, or at least see a gameboy advance.   The jump from GBC to GBA was a big one indeed, do you think some of the titles we\'ve seen is as good as it\'s gonna get.  Or do you think in 2 years most games will function 3D like THPS2.  I kept wondering, how much better can it get.  Like what kind of Gameboy would ther be after gameboy advance?  Would Sony enter the market of handhelds?   What would you call the next gameboy?  You know, stuff like that.  For now, I\'m overly satisfied with my Gameboy Advance.

Maybe graphically(is that even a word?), but the overall gameplay in GBA games is just bound to improve over time, just like every system\'s games do. Also, GBA is a real chance for the people who started gaming during the 32/64 bit generation because it will give them a golden opportunity to experience the wonder of perfected 2D gaming.

No, the GBA was designed mainly for 2D gaming and most developers will stick with the 2d format. But we\'ll probably see RPGs that look like THPS2 eventually(like Golden Sun) but for the other genres it\'s basically just 2D goodness.

On a side note, I got a glacier GBA today. I\'m technically not allowed to open it yet but you can\'t stop my curiosity. Anyways, I really didn\'t expect it to be THAT small, but yet the screen is surprisingly huge. I got out one of my Pokemon Yellow(note, on my birthday last year, my cousin bought me Pokemon Stadium(which sucks miserably) with that game so no one say anything about that!) and it looked great. I can already tell that the lighting won\'t be a problem. But damn that thing sticks out of the GBA really far...

i think the greaphics will get better. i do know the GBA is not a 3D machine but the sprite capabilites are almost endless. What disapionts me the most is the lack of RPG\'s so far. Thier are about 10 in Japan and I konw not all will make it over here. So far I know of 2 coming. Tactics orge and Breath Of Fire. Im looking forward to both.

I personally doubt we see another big handheld release for at least 4-5 years. Then, I think it will once again be by Nintendo.

Graphic wise, of course I think they will get better for the GBA. It just the the natrual way of systems. Though, how much better I\'m not sure.

I would call the next Gameboy something like \'Gameboy Future\' or something lame like that.


( P.S, the day handhelds do true 3D games is the day 2D will be forever gone and I quit playin\' games, damnit..)

Sony has siad they would never invest in a handheld system. The believe as does everyone elts that Nontindo has that prety much taken care of.

I think eventually handhelds will move to 3D gaming, which I think blows. There\'s a lot to be said about 2D, but right now it\'s not "in". Everyone (or at least mass market consumers) are hyped about the latest advances in 3D graphics.. and it seems natural that handhelds will follow the course their clunky livingroom counterparts did.

Now, what I personally would like to see is 32bit/64bit/128bit 2D gaming. Once you hit 128 bit, things start getting photorealistic.. and I can just imagine the joy of playing MegaMan XXXV or a Contra game at that level of power.

However, even if Handhelds DO give way to 3D.. there are still other devices to get your 2D gaming fix on. Eventually there\'ll be high end Cell phone games, Radioshack 12-in-1 games, small underground groups of developers sharing their creations and things like that which will push 2D gaming well past the GBA.. but I think right now are the last "glory days" of 2D unless the market shifts drastically. Then again.. knowing Nintnedo.. unless there\'s some real competition they won\'t release another handheld for roughly 8 to 10 years, so you may still have quite a while to enjoy what we\'ve got now.

I\'m still happy with my oldschool gameboy (the grey big one) I bought it 1992 and it\'s still worfing.

But this is the best handheld (but very expensive and limited):

The newest revision of that is the best. No Atari symbol and shaped like the GBA. Its even backlit!


Sonyfan-- is right though. If Nintendo see\'s no reason to release another handheld it may be 8 years or more before we see a completely new handheld.

Cool beans!  I enjoyed reading the comparason of it to GBA.

I\'m perfectly happy with my GBA - I currently own following titles:

Kuru Kuru Kururin ( wonderful, WONDERFUL and addictive game! )
F-Zero Maximum Velocity ( damn hard to beat - but very good game )
Mario Advance ( it\'s the classic Super Mario Bros. 2 and even older Super Mario Bros. - the first one being the second best mario ever )
Rayman Advance ( it\'s like the Playstation-ancestor, but in a handheld... incredible - and yet very playable and as great as it was back at those good ol\' days! )

And really, I don\'t NEED 3d in my GBA. I bought GBA mainly because I wanted to revisit the games I once owned when I was smaller on my dear ol\' Snes wich I then sold... foolish thing - but I\'m now fixing the error I made

I feel your pain. I use to own one of the original SNES (got it at launch) loaned it to family along with about 40 games and they moved off with all of them! Then they loaned them out to one of their friends and I\'ve never seen \'em since. So, I had to buy one of the newer units (Bleh) and start recollecting my games.....

No Atari symbol makes it cool? Dude, the Atari logo is sweet, it\'s so old-school. I need an Atari shirt like the guyin Road Trip had.

that\'s the worst possible thing someone could do - and your pain must\'ve been twice as big as mine... at least it was my decision to let the Snes go... but... that\'s a decision I\'ve been regretting ever since!

Like I said, GBA is, fortunately, easing my pain.

Valid point. That shirt does kick ass. And I am guilty of having a Winamp Atari skin...

But for some reason, it just looks odd on that handheld. Maybe its just me , though.

I have..

well i am happy with my original SNES

its sitting on my tv right now with Secret of Mana in it and ChronoTrigger sitting next to it

dang SNES is the system that got me into gaming so much so i hope that 2d never goes the way of the old and it seems like it might because game devs are interviewing the worng people they need to talk to people like us who still love 2d gaming and will always support
