Performance Analyser 2 ?
« on: June 30, 2001, 10:35:18 AM »
In another forum someone said that there will be a new version of the performance analyser tool for PS2.I think he read it in the UK edition of OPSM. Is it true ?
That would be great , the first one made games like GT possible on the PSone.

It helps you to get the best out of the ps2,like what macabre said,it really helped the ps1 games out,and it should really help developers out with the ps2.

any more specifics on this would be great(i.e. what exactly does it do?) as it sounds interesting....
I have adjusted well to not being well adjusted.

Í´m no techie , but it helps developers to find problems faster. When a game has slowdown in some part , the PA shows them where and why. So they don`t need to search the problem and can concentrate on improving the code. It also shows the utilization of the different hardware components to find bottlenecks and hidden potential.

And yes, it`s coming. I did some research and Sony announced it at their E3 press conference.

Ahh yes, if you guys remember the 1st game to have utilised this on the PS1 was Gran Turismo, and we all know
what sort of leap in graphics from previous PS1 racers.

Basically, the system analyses what processors are doing what. For example it tells devs how much processor
time is bieng used and how efficiently. This way developers could tighten up the code and get rid of wasted
clockcycles and basically get every last drop from the hardware. The PS2 version would be very helpfull and i
suppose that software will take an even bigger leap than the PS1 Analyser did.
We will see.....

i\'m a little into progaming, and about what has been said about optimizing the code, this tool will make the code more efficiant in many ways, in addition to what was mentioned by Stanzo and others, this tool will propably search for the areas which need more improviment, for example, chunks of code could be used more than others, so it\'s best to start optimizing the most used code chunk before the rest, and this tool will make it easier to find out the weaknesses of the code.

This all sounds good. But lets just hope it makes results

Is this tool made by Sony itself or is it a
3rd party developed thing like Renderware
from Criterion ?

Anyway, I think it\'s healthy to stay a bit sceptical
and keep both feet on the ground : I believe this
technical leap only when I see it, time will tell.....

BTW. Is this tool expensive for devs. or not ?
\'Cause if it is that wouldn\'t be much help, would it ?
( considering the talented but small devs who go
to XBOX due to high dev costs on PS2 ).

Dude, every console has some form of a dev. kit.  It always helps out the programmers and is almost always used.

Of course every console has.
But that tool is not a part of the current dev. kits. I think the devs will get it as a free update.
