Sales of computer games to prison inmates by leading Internet and mail-order site SoftwareFirst shows Tomb Raider star Lara Croft in the ascendancy. Now there\'s a surprise!

Software First, Europe’s largest independent Internet and mail-order software, hardware and DVD retail retailer has released figures detailing the extent of computer games use within the UK’s prisons.

Unsurprisingly, Lara Croft, heroine of Tomb Raider, proves the most popular icon, with her games accounting for the most sales to UK prisons. Gory survival horror Resident Evil takes second place, with the explosive Syphon Filter completing the top three.

Inmates order games from SoftwareFirst via the company’s telephone hotline. Repeat purchases demonstrate that the games and consoles are freely available within prisons, with some customers even opting to join the company’s Club, which offers even further discounts on SoftwareFirst’s competitive prices.

Comments William Flatau, managing director, SoftwareFirst, “Although a tiny percentage of our overall business is to the UK’s prisons, we do feel that the most popular titles ordered does present an interesting moral dilemma. As adults, our customers are free to choose whatever games they like; but do we really want inmates playing games with such graphical imagery as Resident Evil, or titles featuring car thefts and shoot-outs like the Grand Theft Auto series?”

“However, it is interesting to note that Lara Croft’s grip over the nation extends to those in prison. Let’s hope they’re not drawing inspiration from Lara – and attempt daring escapes such as she.”
