Logitech FF Steering Wheel @ Best Buy
« on: July 08, 2001, 12:15:59 PM »
Just a heads up on the Logitech FF Steering wheel (I won\'t say "designed for GT3" cuz mm will move this thread to the GT3 forum...and I believe this steering wheel post s/b a Main Forum thread given that other driving games will be supported by Logitech\'s wheel)

Best Buy has an offer that started this week (Thanks for the heads up Harmless) that if you purchase the Logitech FF for PS2 steering wheel at regular MSRP ($99.99) Best Buy will give you a mail in rebate form to receive a $30 Best Buy gift card in the mail.  Not tooo shabby a deal!

I purchased Logitech\'s wheel today & tried it out on Nascar HEAT.  It works great!!!  Cool beans!!!  Can\'t wait for GT3 to arrive this week oops, damn, mm is sure to move this post now!!!.

Anyway...thought the members here would like to know about this deal Best Buy is offering...

How does the wheel feel? Shoddy plastic, or something sturdy and worth the money?

Whoa, whoa!!!

Okay!  Let\'s see here:

pstwo: How was the Nascar Heat game? Does it look detail? Sounds like you are asking this question independent of the effect of the steering wheel.  Regardless, here\'s my answer: Nascar HEAT definitely a fun racing game.  Great looking (although there are some definite jaggies that some will complain about...the typical "professional" gamer\'s response of "if the jaggies don\'t affect gameplay, then I don\'t mind them" comes into play here).  Mostly this is a fast, and deliberate racer.  Drafting plays a huge part in the success of this game.  Frankly, taking the Pole in preparation for racing actually kinda sucks cuz with some serious A.I. drafting your winning butt, you lose position often in the first turn with a misplaced track-line.  With that, 3-5 racers will typically pass you in tight-draft formation before you can get back in tha\' schitz.  Competitive would be the best way to respond to this game.  In typical Nascar fashion, however, to like this game is to like oval (i.e. circular "roundy-round") tracks.  It offers road races aka "GT", but I\'ve not taken myself on those races as of this writing...  HEAT is an excellent game in my opinion.

Toxical: How does the wheel feel? Shoddy plastic, or something sturdy and worth the money? Feels good.  Real good!  Takes my current driving experience of Nascar HEAT to an entirely different level over that of using the PS2 joypad.  Footpedals on carpet work great.  Haven\'t the opportunity to try them on a wood floor, but as there are non-skid pads on the bottom of the pedals/plate, I\'d suspect little slippage.  Wheel itself is made of plastic.  Get that out there right away.  No real exterior metal to speak of.  Shoddy plastic?  Not sure I\'d go that far.  Once mounted, there\'s little opportunity to notice as fit-n-finish is quite nice.  Only REAL complaint I\'d have would be the "vise-clamps" themselves.  THEY ARE PLASTIC.  This part does feel shoddy IMO.  I\'d have been happier if they were of some component that wouldn\'t likely break if I screwed it down too tight...  Remedy?  Don\'t screw unit down to tight! :D

Ethan_Hunt: Is the wheel like in arcades, like if you take a corner does it give some resistance? Ethan, you definitely enjoy resistance with this wheel.  Nothing poor about this aspect of Logitech\'s product.  As mentioned above, however, to compare it to an arcade (i.e. metal-based) steering wheel, it does not "feel" as solid...but it definitely holds its own over any FF PC-based wheel on the market.  Back to the resistance...  It ain\'t just in the corners, you get squirrly on the straights and the wheel will let you know it.  I have not taken a car down into the "grass fields" of any tracks yet, but I\'d guess the wheel will let you know you are cutting thru turf as well.

I like the wheel... hope these replies help!
