will the hard drive be a hit ? -- question answered inside

Well it looks like this thing is going to be a hit.

Sony have revealed that the initial batch of PlayStation 2 hard disk drives has already sold out, over a week before the unit is due to launch. But there is some good news.

The unit\'s original quota of 10,000 (due for release July 19th) may have been snapped up, but it has been reported that a further 10,000 will be available on July 27th exclusively from Sony Japan\'s online store.

Of course, if you live in the US or Europe, you may not be so excited, but it\'s good to see the unit being embraced by the Japanese public - 10,000 Final Fantasy fans no doubt!

Here\'s a copy and paste of a reply in another thread regarding this subject which proves what you just said completely wrong.

Could this truly be a sign that the hard-drive could actually succeed?

Of course not, kiddies. 10 000 is a VERY small number in the gaming world, the HD will have to sell a lot more than that to make profit.

It really doesn\'t surprise me that 10 000 people pre-ordered one, because 10 000 is not a very big number! I\'m surprised any of you are actually startled over this. BAH!

Bottom line- this is no sign of the HD succeeding. You\'ll have to wait for a long time to find that answer out. This don\'t mean shiat.

I agree 10000 isnt a huge number , but then again the hdd is around 140 or 150 bucks too which is a substantila price to pay. the mere fact that 10000 people went ahead and preordered it is a very good indication of how well it will do.
this of course is my own opinion and could be completely wrong but im banking on this thing doing well, i mean the logitech steering wheel is selling like mad and it doesnt even make the game load faster or allow for greater depth of gameplay

Everyone is certainly entitles to their own opinion, but the fact remains that it is crazy to assume the HD will succeed simply because 10 000 people pre-ordered it.

Because I wasn\'t clear enough.

No matter how you look at it, 10 000 is still simply a small number in the gaming world. The people who pre-ordered it were most likely PS2 loyalists who will buy any crap they out out. Aka- fanboys. Some people will buy anything. I know for fact that the 64DD add-on for the N64 had just that many pre-orders in the US, and look where it is now(I read about it in Nintendo Power, very reliable source).

I bet you the add-on will sell-out on it\'s launch day, but that still won\'t neccassaraly mean it will succeed also(DC did well at the start but it still bombed). I still cannot begin to explain how 10 000 is such a small number in the gaming industry...

Just don\'t get your hopes up on anything just yet.

can i please just live in my own little fantasy world ?
Well as much as I hate to admit it I did get kind of fooled by the number. I guess when you want something to do well in the worst way you will grasp on to any little piece of info for justification.  just look at msxbox for example j/k

Jumpman, I\'m quite sceptical about the HDD as well.
But... That doesn\'t mean I don\'t talk/want it into a
failure allready.
As long as I\'m not forced ( required to play some AAA
game ) to buy it I\'m fine.
Several ppl on this board don\'t really like the set-top-box
Sony is maybe heading. I would like the PS2 to remain
a game only console, but hey if some ppl want a HDD for
online play that\'s fine.

Come on people times change, just because add-ons didnt work like 8 years ago, doesnt mean that it wont succeed, lets just wait and see what happens.
And jumpman i bet if this was an add-on for the GameCube you would be singing it praises, and you would buy it with out a thought!
On the 15 of March 2002, i was going to leave these forums for good.
But on the 16 of March i realised i couldn\'t ever say bye to you guys, so i am staying here for good!
