Noise coming from flimsy disc tray
« on: July 13, 2001, 02:14:16 AM »
You may have seen my previous threads about the PS2 being noisy when in the hrz position with blue PS2 disc.

I have found what is making the noise, the PS2\'s drive is a fast drive so it sounds pretty much like the equivalent speed PC CD-ROM drive and we all know how noisy they can be.

There is an extra noise in there though, a sort of clattering noise.

This can only be heard with the blue disc (they have to spin the fastest, not as densely packed as a dvd disc) and the machine is horizontal.

It sounds like the plastic casing is vibrating.

I tryed holding the case to stop it vibrating but it wasn\'t that.

Then I tryed pushing on the drive tray, voila.

The disc tray on the PS2 is soooooo flimsy and it vibrates when it gets up to speed (blue discs) if you push gently on the front of the tray while it is spinning with two fingers, one either side of the ps2 badge, the noise stops.

For the huge cost of the PS2 Sony surely could\'ve included a sturdier drive mechanism.

The vibration seems to stop when the PS2 is in the vertical position.

A lot of high speed dirves to this.  My DVD drive on my Gatewat does the same thing, but Gateway won\'t fix it \'cause they state it\'s "normal wear and tear."  I asked them how it could be wear and tear if it\'s been ddoing that since the begining, but I couldn\'t get an answer from them.  I just turn up my speakers to counter-react the noise.  There\'s nothing you can do about it.

Although, this has never happened to me and my PS2, blue disks and everything.

Cheap units really. With all the trouble of launch day, it shows that Sony must have been in a rush or something. I\'ve heard so many horror stories that it keeps me awake at night wondering if my PS2 is ok as a knocked it accidently when picking up the controller etc. :)

Theres no excuse for it really but we can\'t do anything.

I still have the loud drive, my unit\'s in vertical and has been worked on twice by Sony techs.

Must just be poor construction.
