NTSC to PAL conversions, GT3
« on: July 15, 2001, 04:37:03 AM »
I understand that PAL tv\'s have an additional 50(?) lines over NTSC systems.

When NTSC is converted to PAL there is 50 lines left over which are filled with black which creates a 25 line top and bottom black boarder and a slightly squashed picture.

Looking at the GT3 PAL demo, there is only about <10mm of boarder, usually a 25 line border is about 25mm top and bottom of my screen.

Those 2*10mm boarders in GT3 work out to be roughly 20 lines in total, therefore the 312 lines on a PAL set minus 20ish balck boarders leaves 282, 20 more than the 262 of the NTSC set.

Where did these extra lines come from, is the PAL version just stretched to fill more of the screen (why not all?) Even if it was the image would still look slightly compressed vertically.

Or are there more lines inserted? But adding more lines top/bottom of a NTSC->PAL converted game would still suffer from a squashed picture, wouldn\'t it?

Confused :nut:

don\'t know how to fix these calculations

Not if you changed the horizontal length of each line to compensate.
