Are we sad or are we hardcore?
« on: July 17, 2001, 10:24:49 AM »
I was on the bus today thinking about my PS2 and then I started thinking damn im into games alot.

I wouldn\'t mind but none of my friends are into games as much as me. Yeah they may play a video game the odd time but they don\'t...

a) play everyday
b) check gaming news constantly daily, and keep update with the gaming scene.
c) own lots of computers and consoles.
d) check forums and have post counts in the 100s and 1000s.

I know im not alone. I mean look at this forum. Its great a load of like minded people can chat. It just seems weird that I know no one like me or like a lot of you forum members, so obbessed with gaming that it plays a bit part in their life.

So would you say this much gaming is sad or would you say its a hardcore gamer (i.e you think its good) ? I suppose its better than taking drugs! :)

Well, I would say Obsessed or even addicted.

It doesn\'t help when your wife is an "enabler".

I gotta go cut the lawn, I say. No, go play [insert game name here], she says.

Oh well, she likes to watch as much as I love to play:) My neighbor once even called the city on my ass because my grass was too long (anal bastard!).

If you speak about the post-count, even mine isn\'t much. I know persons on messageboards such as LinkinPark\'s who have created over 3000 posts on their FIRST month there. It has taken up to 10 months to achieve this number.

Not that I have tried to achieve it.

But, yes, I often think about it. Every second I spend watching TV, surfing the net, playing video-games is a second I have wasted. But with what should I replace these with? Reading is waste of time also, and so is dating the opposite sex. And even after gaming, watching and chatting I have time to date the opposite sex, friends and go jogging and do excersize.

But isn\'t life about choices?
everyone choices how to waste their life. This is life, like everything else. We\'re not obsessed, we\'re not sad - we\'re alive. You\'re sad if you waste EVERY day of your life playing, and not leave time for anything else.

I agree with all what you said. As for that last bit well im not that bad... :D

I don\'t do a lot now its the holidays. I should really bite the bullet and get a part time job whilst I wait for Uni to start. In daytime all I really get upto is watching TV, playing video games, creating music, DJing, shopping... hmm actually this list isn\'t so bad.

I suppose being serious about a hobby, be it gaming is fine, even though it still has that reputation about it.

I suppose only having a few hobbies and doing nothing but them few hobbies in your free time is sad. Who cares though, "sad" is in the eye of the beholder. Different people who have different life styles will look at different people as being sad.

Although in terms of sadness I would sooner have my life, be it prehaps a little dull to most people, than a life of a school leaver, drug abuser, scum bag, no offense to any of you out there. ;)

I dunno why I started this thread. I just think that I need to get outside more and do more outside activities. Im so lazy though. :p

there are two ways I see it.

If you own tons of games, play them, collect them, have a special storage spot, just for them, read about them everyday. You are either sad or hardcore.

you aresad if you do all these things, but then won\'t admit to it if someone asks you about a game or about why your room looks like it does.

you are hardcore is you wear videogames clothing (me) or openly praise games among friends and people you don\'t know. I also feel a tad bit of pride when new people enter my room and stare in amazement at my collection (16 consoles, few hundred games, and 2 arcade machines). that is hardcore. oh yeah, and I used to work in a game store.

It\'s a hobby, it\'s something you do that you enjoy. I don\'t see anything sad about that.

I like to think I am \'hardcore\' by the way you describe it. I have no problems goin\' up to complete strangers and helpin\' them select a game if they are having problems. I have 13 consoles a few hundred games. Game t-shirts, so on and so on.

Well I guess I\'m sad then, because I don\'t like to classify myself as hardcore. I think to do that, I make myself seem ritgeous.. elite in my own way... that my oppinion means more than another less experienced persons. That\'s wrong. I\'m a human being, one who happens to really enjoy videogames. It\'s no more obessive than an old lady who collects bells, or a kid who collects stamps, or a teenager who collects memerabila from their favorite band.

I don\'t wear videogame clothing (Although I would proudly wear a shirt with the old \'92 Sierra logo on it), I don\'t really talk about it that much with other people, and I even think Sony has made a positive impact on the gaming world. If others want to consider me "Hardcore" then that\'s their judgement call... I\'m just a gamer.

I\'m fascinated with videogames. Maybe or sure there\'s alot of ppl out there who are better at getting higher scores at lotsa games than myself. But I\'m also very intersted from the developement side of it. That\'s why
I learned Maya, and continue to do so.
So there you have the graphics, animation, design, 3D artistswork, 2D artistswork, gameplay design and of course programming. ( the last one I can\'t do ).
Gameplay is very interesting. I\'m making my graduate scription about it. Making a virtual 3D real time world with random factors and bots that interact with all another which should create a good game.
Imo games are generally not given credit for that in comparison to for example to Hollywood movies. Gameplay is the Editing/plot/story of games, and much more.
Editing can make or brake a movie. Check out Jackie Chan for that. It\'s a movie technique perfected by Eisenstein that made movies BIG. So imo gamedesign should be regarded by the whole world equally at least.
